Philip Balma, a Ph.D. candidate in Italian at Indiana
University in Bloomington, teaches in the Department
of Romance Languages and Literatures at The
University of Notre Dame. His work has appeared in
Lettere Italiane as well as Italica, the journal of the
American Association of Teachers of Italian. His first
book, Streetwise Italian: the User-Friendly Guide to
Italian Slang and Idioms, was published by McGraw-
Hill in April 2005.
Gary Brown is a doctoral student at The University
of Texas at Dallas; his research interest is German
philosophy, and he has published translations of
Nietzsche’s History in the Service and Disservice of
Life, and Richard Wagner in Bayreuth.
Deborah Dougherty holds a Ph.D. in Spanish
Literature from Michigan State University and is
currently an associate professor of Spanish at Alma
College. She has translated Ruth, The One Who Fled
The Bible, a novel by Cuban-born author Josefina
Leyva, and is currently working on Leyva’s second
novel, Entre los rostros de Tailandia. She is the
author of Heroes: Death Denied in Selected Dramas
of the Golden Age and various articles of literary
criticism.
John DuVal is professor and director of the program
in literary translation at The University of Arkansas.
Among his publications are Fabliaux, Fair and Foul
(1992), (tr.) The Discovery of America by Cesare
Pascarella (1991), (tr.) Tales of Trilussa by Carlo
Salustri (1990), (tr.) Long Blues in A Minor, by
Gerhard Herzhaft (1988), and Cuckolds, Clerics, and
Countrymen: Medieval French Fabliaux (1982).
Asalet Erten is associate professor in the Department
of Translation and Interpretation at Hacettepe
University. Her current areas of interest are
contemparary Turkish literature, literary translation,
translation criticism, cultural studies, and medical
translation. She has translated Turkish poets and short
story writers into English, has authored some 30
articles, and published Medical Terminology and
Medical Translation (Tıp Termi-nolojisi ve Tıp
Metinleri Çevirisi) (Seçkin Publishing House 2003).
Monica Hubel was a graduate student at San Diego
State University at the time she wrote her article in
this issue about translating Kafka’s The
Metamorphosis.
Amity McGinnis is a graduate student in French-to-
English translation at The University of Wisconsin-
Milwaukee. She has collaborated on the translation of
a book of essays, The Geopolitics of Hunger, 2004
(publication pending) for Action Against Hunger, and
translated parts of a Website on olfactory marketing.
Elizabeth Gamble Miller is professor emerita at
Southern Methodist University. She has published
bilingual editions of works by Nela Rio and eight
other writers, as well as translations of poetry, fiction,
and fable.
Thomas Moore was on the faculty of The College of
New Jersey when he wrote this issue’s paper on
translation in Brazil.
Rebekah Presson Mosby produced and hosted the
syndicated public radio program, New Letters on the
Air for 13 years. She coedited (with Elise Paschen) the
2001 bestseller, Poetry Speaks (Sourcebooks), and
edited the Rhino Records poetry box sets, In Their
Own Voices: A Century of Recorded Poetry (1996)
and Our Souls Have Grown Deep Like the Rivers:
Black Poets Read Their Work (2000).
D. Bruno Starrs is the author of short plays,
academic articles, film criticism, and the novel, I
Woke Up Feeling Thailand, based on his experience
teaching English in Southeast Asia. He lives in
Melbourne.
