<strong>Ph</strong>.D. <strong>Program</strong> <strong>Guidebook</strong> 2007-2008<br />
ECONOMICS<br />
Fields <strong>of</strong> study in economics include price theory, market structure, industrial organization,<br />
labor economics, financial economics, business cycles, economic growth, and international<br />
economics. Students take advantage <strong>of</strong> a wide range <strong>of</strong> course <strong>of</strong>ferings in both the Graduate<br />
<strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> Business and the Department <strong>of</strong> Economics. After completion <strong>of</strong> course work,<br />
students write dissertations in fields <strong>of</strong> their choosing.<br />
When fulfilling general <strong>Ph</strong>D degree requirements, please make sure to consult the relevant<br />
section <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Guidebook</strong> that discusses those requirements (e.g., curriculum paper<br />
requirements in Chapter 2, co-authorship rules in Chapter 5), in addition to area specific<br />
requirements (if any).<br />
Economics as a Dissertation Area:<br />
For students writing a dissertation in economics, the General Exam requirements are:<br />
Year One:<br />
Complete the Economics Core: Successful completion <strong>of</strong> the following 8-course<br />
economics core with a grade point average <strong>of</strong> “B” or higher. If a student takes a<br />
course more than once, the highest grade will be used to calculate the GPA.<br />
Microeconomics (3 courses): E30100 – Price <strong>The</strong>ory I, E30200 – Price <strong>The</strong>ory<br />
II, E30300 – Price <strong>The</strong>ory III.<br />
Macroeconomics: (2 courses): E33000 – <strong>The</strong>ory <strong>of</strong> Income I, E33100 – <strong>The</strong>ory<br />
<strong>of</strong> Income II.<br />
Quantitative Analysis (3 courses): E31000, E31100, E31200 – Empirical<br />
Analysis I, II, III.<br />
Pass the Economics Core Examinations in Microeconomics and Quantitative<br />
Analysis. Achieve a passing grade on the core examinations in Microeconomics and<br />
Quantitative Analysis, administered by the Department <strong>of</strong> Economics. Students<br />
should plan to take these examinations at the end <strong>of</strong> their first year <strong>of</strong> study.<br />
Participate in the Applied Economics Workshop: First year students are required<br />
to attend the Applied Economics Workshop during the spring quarter <strong>of</strong> their first<br />
year, and for all <strong>of</strong> their second year and third years.<br />
Year Two:<br />
Complete nine <strong>Ph</strong>.D. level courses in economics, including Applied Price<br />
<strong>The</strong>ory– E34201, with a grade point average <strong>of</strong> “B” or higher.<br />
Demonstrate Pr<strong>of</strong>iciency in Two Fields <strong>of</strong> Specialization: Students must<br />
demonstrate pr<strong>of</strong>iciency in two areas for which economics General Examinations are<br />
<strong>of</strong>fered. <strong>The</strong> student must pass the General Examination in one area. In the other<br />
area <strong>of</strong> specialization, the student must achieve a grade point average <strong>of</strong> “B” or<br />
better in the area’s course sequence (unless otherwise specified). If neither area<br />
<strong>of</strong>fers an exam, the student must achieve a grade point average <strong>of</strong> “B” or better in<br />
both areas’ course sequences (unless otherwise specified). <strong>The</strong> courses for this<br />
requirement fulfill a portion <strong>of</strong> the nine-course requirement above.<br />
Fields <strong>of</strong> study are to be chosen from the list below. Other course sequences in<br />
which a field examination is <strong>of</strong>fered may be substituted with the approval <strong>of</strong> the area<br />
advisor.<br />
