foundation courses required <strong>of</strong> all sociology <strong>Ph</strong>.D. students, Statistical Methods<br />
<strong>of</strong> Research I & II (Soc. 30004 & 30005), followed by a specialty course such<br />
as:<br />

Soc. 40109 – Log-Linear Analysis,<br />
Soc. 40103 – Event-history Analysis,<br />
Soc. 40800 – Formal Methods for Sequence Narrative Data, or<br />
Soc. 30308 and 30309 – Applied Regression Analysis I and II.<br />
• A course sequence through the GSB could be the two statistics foundation<br />
courses, B41901 – Probability and Statistics and B41902 – Statistical Inference,<br />
followed by a specialty course such as:<br />

B41903 – Applied Econometrics,<br />
B41912 – Applied Multivariate Analysis,<br />
B41910 – Time Series Analysis for Forecasting & Model Bldg., or<br />
B41914 – Multivariate Time-Series Analysis.<br />
Students interested in experimental design should consider a specialty course on the<br />
topic in Psychology.<br />
5) Successful completion <strong>of</strong> the workshop participation requirement.<br />
A. <strong>The</strong> <strong>Ph</strong>.D. <strong>Program</strong> workshop requirement to reach candidacy is met by<br />
registering and receiving a passing grade in the Workshop in Organizations and<br />
Markets (B39600) during each quarter <strong>of</strong> the 2 nd and 3 rd years. To receive a<br />
passing grade you must turn in write-ups for two <strong>of</strong> the papers presented that<br />
quarter. <strong>The</strong>se must be turned in to the faculty member responsible for the<br />
workshop that quarter.<br />
B. When taught, students are expected to attend and participate in the Argument and<br />
Evidence Workshop led by Pr<strong>of</strong>. Ron Burt. Intended to improve student<br />
reasoning, provide a context for meeting the curriculum paper requirement, and<br />
prepare students for the job market, this is a non-credit workshop that meets<br />
every other week during one quarter <strong>of</strong> the year. Students make arguments and<br />
present evidence in a <strong>Chicago</strong> workshop fashion, subject to peer and faculty<br />
critique.<br />
6) Successful completion <strong>of</strong> the applications course requirement as determined by<br />
the <strong>Ph</strong>.D. Student Area Advisor in O&M. All students are expected to be skilled<br />
in applying social organization theory to practical issues in business. This<br />
requirement can be met by working as a Teaching Assistant in one <strong>of</strong> three<br />
discipline-based core M.B.A. courses as determined by the <strong>Ph</strong>.D. Area Advisor for<br />
Organizations and Markets:<br />
• B39001 – Strategy and Structure: Markets and Organizations, for students<br />
interested in macro issues.<br />
• B39002 – Network Structures <strong>of</strong> Effective Management<br />
• B39101 – Technology Strategy<br />
