<strong>Ph</strong>.D. <strong>Program</strong> <strong>Guidebook</strong> 2007-2008<br />
• <strong>The</strong> student must be in residence and work during his or her first summer in the<br />
<strong>Program</strong>.<br />
• <strong>The</strong> student must submit an outline (see below) <strong>of</strong> the proposed paper to the <strong>Ph</strong>.D.<br />
Office by the last day <strong>of</strong> spring quarter <strong>of</strong> the first year.<br />

Students writing an original research paper must submit an outline <strong>of</strong> the<br />
proposed study or a copy <strong>of</strong> an existing paper the student is extending to the two<br />
finance faculty members with whom the student would like to work.<br />
Students working as a junior co-author with a finance faculty member must<br />
submit an outline <strong>of</strong> the proposed joint project.<br />
• <strong>The</strong> outline should be accompanied by the appropriate CRSP application form,<br />
signed by two finance faculty sponsors.<br />
• A draft <strong>of</strong> the paper or research project must be submitted to the <strong>Ph</strong>.D. Office by the<br />
first day <strong>of</strong> autumn quarter.<br />
• <strong>The</strong> paper or research project will be evaluated by a committee <strong>of</strong> three finance<br />
faculty members. If it is approved, the student will receive a grant <strong>of</strong> $5,000 before<br />
the end <strong>of</strong> the autumn quarter.<br />
Here is an example <strong>of</strong> a four-year course schedule for a <strong>Ph</strong>.D. student writing a dissertation in<br />
finance with economics as a support area and econometrics/statistics as a coordinated<br />
sequence.<br />
