<strong>Ph</strong>.D. <strong>Program</strong> <strong>Guidebook</strong> 2007-2008<br />
<strong>The</strong> paper or research project must be submitted to the <strong>Ph</strong>.D. Office by the first day <strong>of</strong><br />
the autumn quarter. <strong>The</strong> paper or research project will be evaluated by a committee <strong>of</strong><br />
finance faculty members. If it is approved, the student will receive a grant <strong>of</strong> $5,000<br />
before the end <strong>of</strong> the autumn quarter.<br />
Note: a student may receive either a <strong>Ph</strong>.D. <strong>Program</strong> Grant or a CRSP Award, but not<br />
both.<br />
PH.D. PROGRAM SPECIAL FELLOWSHIP AWARDS<br />
Under special circumstances, students may receive one <strong>of</strong> several <strong>Ph</strong>.D. program endowed<br />
fellowship awards. Generally, these are awarded to students who have applied for and been<br />
awarded 5 th year stipend support, with the exception <strong>of</strong> some area awards that are used to<br />
support dissertation research costs and some awards for summer paper funding. <strong>The</strong>se<br />
awards include:<br />
<strong>The</strong> Oscar Mayer 5th Year Stipend: This endowment fund was established by a grant from<br />
the Oscar Mayer Foundation and a personal gift from Oscar G. Mayer, Jr., in memory <strong>of</strong> his<br />
late father. <strong>The</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong> the fund is to support excellent students in their fifth year.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Brunswick-Davidson Accounting Research Scholarship: This endowment fund was<br />
established with a gift from the Brunswick Foundation in honor <strong>of</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>. Sidney Davidson to<br />
support the GSB’s <strong>Ph</strong>.D. students in accounting. Its purpose is to enable accounting <strong>Ph</strong>.D.<br />
candidates to obtain materials that would expedite the completion <strong>of</strong> their dissertations. <strong>The</strong><br />
accounting faculty may elect a recipient when they deem there is a student who merits it.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Hillel J. Einhorn Memorial Scholarship: This endowment fund was established in<br />
honor <strong>of</strong> the late Mr. Einhorn, who was a GSB faculty member, by his widow, Susan. <strong>The</strong><br />
purpose <strong>of</strong> the fund is to support a student pursuing studies in behavioral decision making.<br />
<strong>The</strong> Sanford J. Grossman Fellowship in Honor <strong>of</strong> Arnold Zellner: This endowment fund<br />
was created by U.C. alumnus (<strong>Ph</strong>.D., Economics, 1975) Sanford J. Grossman for the<br />
following purpose: “<strong>The</strong> fellowship will be awarded annually to an outstanding <strong>Ph</strong>.D.<br />
student, and its recipient determined by the Dean and Director <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Ph</strong>.D. <strong>Program</strong>. <strong>The</strong><br />
principal and income from the sums I contribute are to be used solely for the purpose <strong>of</strong><br />
supporting <strong>Ph</strong>.D. students at the GSB who are designated publicly as recipients <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Sanford J. Grossman fellowship in honor <strong>of</strong> Arnold Zellner.”<br />
<strong>The</strong> Charles T. Horngren Doctoral Fellowship: This endowment fund was established by<br />
a gift from GSB <strong>Ph</strong>.D. alumnus in accounting (1955), Charles T. Horngren, pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />
emeritus at Stanford <strong>University</strong>. This fellowship is to be awarded to an accounting <strong>Ph</strong>.D.<br />
student.<br />
Wesley Pickard Endowed Fellowship: This endowment fund was created by Wesley<br />
Pickard (MBA 1972) to provide fellowships for <strong>Ph</strong>.D. students.<br />
Katherine Dusak Miller Fellowship in Finance: This endowment fund was established by<br />
a gift from GSB <strong>Ph</strong>.D. alumnus (1976) William Waters and his wife <strong>Ph</strong>yllis in honor <strong>of</strong><br />
Merton Miller’s wife, Katherine Dusak Miller, to provide fellowships to finance students.<br />
<strong>The</strong> John Leusner Fellowship: This endowment fund was established by the Graduate<br />
<strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> Business and the Leusner Family to support outstanding GSB <strong>Ph</strong>.D. students in<br />
finance who are beyond the proposal stage. <strong>The</strong> fellowship honors the memory <strong>of</strong> John<br />
Leusner, a Finance <strong>Ph</strong>.D. student who died in 1996. <strong>The</strong> Leusner Fellowship recognizes a<br />
finance <strong>Ph</strong>.D. student whose dissertation proposal exhibits outstanding creative potential. To<br />
qualify for the award, a student must be nominated by his or her dissertation advisor after the<br />
rev. 7/2007 65
