<strong>Ph</strong>.D. <strong>Program</strong> <strong>Guidebook</strong> 2007-2008<br />
INTRODUCTION<br />
This guidebook provides general and specific information for <strong>Ph</strong>.D. students at the<br />
<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Chicago</strong> Graduate <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> Business (GSB) who matriculate during the 2007-<br />
08 academic year. <strong>The</strong> general procedures and rules (not associated with dissertation<br />
area requirements) in this <strong>Guidebook</strong> apply to all <strong>Ph</strong>.D. students, regardless <strong>of</strong> year <strong>of</strong><br />
matriculation.<br />
<strong>Ph</strong>.D. students should refer to this guidebook for information regarding the general and<br />
specific <strong>Ph</strong>.D. degree requirements and for information regarding other <strong>Ph</strong>.D. <strong>Program</strong><br />
procedures and rules. <strong>The</strong> <strong>Ph</strong>.D. degree requirements described in this <strong>Guidebook</strong> apply to<br />
students matriculating in the 2007-08 academic year for their entire tenure as <strong>Ph</strong>.D.<br />
students in the Graduate <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong> Business, except for those students who change<br />
dissertation areas. Specific dissertation and support area requirements for a student who<br />
changes dissertation areas will be determined by the area to which the student transfers at<br />
the time <strong>of</strong> the transfer.<br />

This <strong>Guidebook</strong> complements the <strong>University</strong>’s Student Manual <strong>of</strong> <strong>University</strong> Policies and<br />
Regulations. Knowledge <strong>of</strong> policies outlined in both is every student’s responsibility.<br />
AREA ADVISORS<br />
A student chooses a dissertation area before entering the <strong>Ph</strong>.D. <strong>Program</strong>. Dissertation areas<br />
include: Accounting, Econometrics and Statistics, Economics, Finance, Managerial and<br />
Organizational Behavior, Management Science/Operations Management, Marketing or<br />
Organizations and Markets. Each <strong>of</strong> these areas is supervised by a faculty advisor, a member<br />
<strong>of</strong> the faculty specializing in that area. <strong>The</strong>se area advisors supervise the evaluation <strong>of</strong><br />
applications to their respective areas, counsel new students on the curriculum in that area and<br />
how to plan their 5-year course <strong>of</strong> study, and serve as advisors to all the students in their<br />
respective areas throughout their course <strong>of</strong> study.<br />
