Except for G. g. erlanger;, levels of genetic variability derived from our <strong>sa</strong>mples of Gazella<br />

gazella are similar to those found in natural populations of a number of artiodactyls (for reviews see<br />

Baccus et al .. 1983; Vas<strong>sa</strong>rt el al., 1991). The mean heterozygosity for 184 species of manunals was<br />

4.1 + 3.5 % (Neva el al., 1984). This value compares to a mean heterozygosity of 5% in G. g.<br />

gazella and 3.6% in G. s. marica. Despite the different origins of the <strong>sa</strong>mples, the absence of genetic<br />

variability in G. g. erlangeri is of concern from a conservation standpoint. This finding is consistent<br />

with results found in 19 loci from blood <strong>sa</strong>mples of 15 individuals (Vas<strong>sa</strong>rt et aI., 1994) and 23<br />

(Vas<strong>sa</strong>rt, unpublished data) individuals of the <strong>sa</strong>me species. It is likely that the null polymorphism<br />
