Pedestrians make up a disproportionate percent of traffic fatalities, especially in the most-populous cities where 11.0% of trips are estimated to be by foot, and 14% of traffic fatalities are pedestrians. New York City has the highest rate of pedestrian traffic fatalities with 53% of all traffic fatalities being pedestrians (19.2% of all trips in New York City are estimated to be by foot). Utah has the highest rate among the 50 states with pedestrians representing 23% of all traffic fatalities state-wide.

Alaska has the highest pedestrian mode share for trips to work with 6.6% of all work trips by foot. Alabama ranks lowest with only 1.2% of all work trips by foot. New York and Vermont rank second and third after Alaska with 5.6% and 5.2% of trips to work by foot respectively.
