The Employment Project<br />

The first two weeks <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> program involve social/interpersonal<br />

training, and are intended to be motiv<strong>at</strong>ional. The last two weeks<br />

focus on cre<strong>at</strong>ing resumes and cover letters, discussing how to<br />

conduct an effective job search and workplace culture, and<br />

interviewing skills practice.<br />

Applicants must be <strong>at</strong> least 18 years old, homeless or <strong>at</strong> risk <strong>of</strong><br />

homelessness, a city resident, willing to seek employment, and<br />

committed to seeking and maintaining a positive lifestyle th<strong>at</strong> will be<br />

supported through employment.<br />

Adults:<br />

• 55% Male, 45% Female<br />

• 29% over <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> 45<br />

• 71% African-American, 6% L<strong>at</strong>ino, 13% Caucasian, 10%<br />

O<strong>the</strong>r/Multiracial<br />

• 45% No High School Diploma/GED<br />

• 72% Homeless<br />

• 67% have felony conviction<br />

Inspir<strong>at</strong>ion Kitchens<br />

This is a restaurant skills training program focusing on basic culinary<br />

skills and concepts, teamwork, food sanit<strong>at</strong>ion and safety, and<br />

restaurant service. In addition to training in <strong>the</strong> kitchen, <strong>the</strong> program<br />

includes a classroom component as well as communic<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

development and pre-employment skills training. Participants<br />

complete an internship through <strong>the</strong>ir work in <strong>the</strong> Inspir<strong>at</strong>ion Kitchens<br />

restaurant, preparing and serving meals to <strong>the</strong> paying public.<br />

13 weeks<br />

20 <strong>at</strong> a time; 109 total enrollments (FY09)<br />

Must be <strong>at</strong> least 18 years old, able to stand for long periods <strong>of</strong> time,<br />

and able to pass a tuberculosis test. Must also pass m<strong>at</strong>h and English<br />

tests with a score <strong>of</strong> <strong>at</strong> least 70%. Must be committed to finding a job<br />

in <strong>the</strong> food-service industry upon program completion. Additionally,<br />

preference is given to those who are homeless, <strong>at</strong>-risk, or ex<strong>of</strong>fenders.<br />
