National Program for the Early
Detection of Breast Cancer
The National Mammography Screening Program
initiated by the ICA currently operates in
collaboration with the Ministry of Health and
healthcare funds. Prof. Gad Rennert, Head
of the National Program for the Early Detection
of Breast Cancer and ICA Advisor on Cancer
Control, delivered a report at a press conference
held marking Breast Cancer Awareness Month
on the statistics of the National Program for the
early dedction of breast cancer financed by the
ICA. The national program monitored about
229,000 mammography screening tests over
the past year. Out of all the tests monitored,
72.5% for screening purposes (166,000 tests),
of which 125,300 tests were conducted on
women between the ages of 50 and 74, which
is the age recommended for screening in the
State of Israel. Based on data collected, it was
found that the percentage of women that were
diagnosed in the very early stages of the disease,
is as high as 70%. A follow - up study indicates
a significant advantage in the survival rate,
among women who were screened, and this is
an encouraging factor on the road to achieving
the target – reducing mortality rates.
Increasing awareness among
special populations
ICA has financed the purchase of a mobile
mammography unit. The mobile unit is available
to women who reside in remote areas and who
are less aware of the importance of screening
tests, such as in Arab villages and development
towns where there is a high percentage of new
immigrants, ultra-Orthodox neighborhoods, etc.
Along the Path, a book about Personal
and Social Perspectives of
Breast Cancer
By Dr. Ilana Kadmon, published in conjunction
with the Israel Cancer Association
Two months ago, a new book
called Along the Path was
recently released by Carta
publishing in conjunction with
the Israel Cancer Association.
The book was written by
Dr. Ilana Kadmon, and it
discusses the personal and
social perspectives of breast cancer. The book
encompasses a broad spectrum of subjects
related to the disease, from the importance
of prevention and early detection, through the
diagnosis stage and culminating in the embarkment
on a complicated journey of personal grappling
with breast cancer. Additionally, the book
contains impressive illustrations, photographs,
useful information about support and assistance
organizations, a list of forums on the Internet
and recommendations for additional reading
references. Dr. Ilana Kadmon is a clinical nurse
specializing in breast cancer at the Hadassah
Ein Karem Medical Center in Jerusalem and in
1996 was the first nurse in Israel to fill the position
of "Breast Cancer Counselor Specialist",
a position that was adopted by the ICA and
is currently implemented through 35 nurses
and social workers in hospitals throughout the
country. Ilana serves as Chairperson of the
Israel Breast Cancer Coalition and is an active
ICA volunteer.
