The Fight against Smoking in
Arab Society
The ICA initiated and coordinates a work group
consisting of representatives of the Ministry of
Education, Ministry of Health, healthcare funds
and other entities, working towards promoting
awareness, prevention and smoking cessation
in Arab society, with an emphasis on extensive
educational activity among elementary and high
school pupils.
Israel Train Authority
The ICA acts in collaboration with the Israel Train
Authority to reduce smoking in train stations
and among the railroad workers themselves.
As part of this activity, the train's PA system
announces that smoking is forbidden in the
station every few minutes, and security guards
have been instructed to inform smokers of this
prohibition. Educational material is distributed
at the train stations and various posters were
hung on smoking and its harmful effects.
‘No Smoking Day'
As every year and as part of the International
'No Smoking Day' held in all WHO member
countries since 1987, Israel marked this day
on May 31st in Israel. This unique day seeks to
place the smoking plague on the global agenda,
increase awareness as to the dangers involved
in tobacco smoking and passive smoke, expand
activities aimed at fighting the smoking plague,
and stand up for our rights to a healthy life and
to protect the future generation.
"No Smoking Day" Press
Conference
"No Smoking Day" 2006 was marked by a
multi-participant press conference in which new
smoking related statistics in Israel and throughout
the globe were released, and smokers were
called upon to refrain from smoking. Dozens
of lectures were delivered in elementary and
high schools by ICA counselors and dozens of
information booths were set up throughout the
country by ICA volunteers, where material was
distributed on the harmful effects of smoking and
the benefits of smoking cessation. The press
conference was held in the presence of the Minister
of Health, Yaakov Ben-Izri, and ICA Director
General, Mrs. Miri Ziv, and up to date statistics
taken from the Minister's Report on Smoking
were presented. The Minister of Health spoke
candidly to those who attended: "To my great
regret, I am a smoker and consequently, I more
aware than others as to the dangers inherent in
smoking. My son and my three grandchildren
are non smokers. I am aware of the national
responsibility that I have taken upon myself,
however the fact that I smoke does not convey
a message to the public. I will make every effort
to ensure that the war against smoking is set as
one of the top priorities of the Ministry of Health.
The main effort should be geared towards the
younger generation, so that they do not even
begin to smoke".
Mrs. Miri Ziv, ICA Director General remarked:
"This day marks a significant and crucial combat
strategy in the long term battle against smoking,
in which we act year round to increase
public awareness about the dangers involved
in smoking and to provide diverse smoking cessation
solutions. However, there is a long road
ahead, and we must develop effective ways of
enforcing existent laws and amending some
of the legislation to be in sync with the times,
including the law prohibiting smoking in public
places. We must also employ taxation as an
effective device to reduce tobacco consumption
among various sectors of the population,
