It goes without saying that it is currently known
that a significant number of cancer diseases
may be prevented. Adopting a healthier lifestyle
may significantly reduce the risk of contracting
prevalent cancer diseases.
"Door Knock" Fundraising
Campaign Opening Ceremony
at the Presidential
Residence
The ICA announced the opening of the 2005 "Door
Knock" Fundraising Campaign on September
8, 2005 in the presence of the President of the
State of Israel, Mr. Moshe Katzav at the Presidential
Residence in Jerusalem. The President
of the State of Israel, Mr. Moshe Katzav, called
upon all Israeli citizens to open their doors, their
hearts and their pockets. Israel Makov, Teva
CEO, was appointed "Door Knock" Fundraising
Campaign Chairman for 2005, and will serve
in this position during the coming year. Makov
replaced Muzy Wertheim who served in this
position in 2004. During the ceremony the torch
was passed on to Israel Makov, Teva CEO. In
his speech at the festive opening ceremony the
new Chairman said that he views this task to
be a personal example of community service,
and an additional and significant part of all the
activities related to social involvement and
contribution to the community, which Teva
as a company leads. Israel Makov lauded the
longtime activity of the ICA, and its volunteer
spirit, based on values that espouse assuming
social responsibility for the fate of society in the
State of Israel. He called upon the State of Israel
to prioritize increasing support for research projects
and outstanding scientists and announced
Teva's contribution to the ICA in the amount of
one million shekels, to finance fellowship grants
for the research of cancer diseases (see further
details separately).
Dr. Shay Izraeli, Head of the Research Unit at
the Pediatric Hematology Ward at Sheba Medical
Center, reported on diagnosis and treatment of
leukemia among children in Israel, and emphasized
that thanks to the activity of ICA, children who
have cancer in Israel receive treatment similar
to that provided in the best medical centers in
the world. Today, the medical centers succeed
in curing 7 out of every 10 children who have
leukemia, and to look at the children's parents
straight in the eye and say that their child has
been given the best treatment. Miri Ziv, ICA
Director General, announced the approval for
funding of the drug herceptin for breast cancer
patients, which was an international precedent
made by the French government and called
upon the Israeli government to act to include
the drug in the health package in Israel. Dr.
Yitzhak Berlovitch, Deputy Director General
of the Ministry of Health delivered a speech on
behalf of the Minister of Health.
Certificates of appreciation for activities advancing
the fight against cancer were presented
by the President of the State of Israel to Yakir
Yotam, Spokesperson of Bezeq for the fundraising
campaign held each 20th of he month,
