Prof. Shraga Segal who served as chairman<br />

of the Israel Cancer Association Research<br />

Committee, passed away suddenly this year.<br />

The Israel Cancer Association held a meeting<br />

in his memory, attended by Prof. E. Robinson<br />

– ICA Chairman, Miri Ziv, ICA Director General,<br />

who moderated the meeting, Prof. Segal's<br />

family, students and colleagues who have been<br />

involved in his extensive activity in many fields<br />

of endeavor. Prof. Yossi Yarden opened the<br />

meeting, Prof. Ronni Apte gave an overview<br />

of his personality, Major-General (res.) Doron<br />

Almog spoke about Shraga Segal as a fighter in<br />

the army and Prof. Yehuda Sheinfeld lectured<br />

on "Everything is Autoimmune until Proven<br />

Otherwise". The ceremony was accompanied<br />

by musical renditions. Prof. Yossi Yarden, who<br />

served as a member of the Research Committee<br />

for several years, agreed to fulfill the request of<br />

the ICA Executive Board and to serve as the<br />

Research Committee Chairman.<br />

Outstanding Researcher<br />

Fund<br />

Each year, the ICA awards dozens of fellowship<br />

grants to physicians in medical centers and to<br />

scientists in research institutes and in universities<br />

throughout the country. This involves basic,<br />

clinical, and epidemiological research, as well<br />

as studies investigating the psycho-social aspects<br />

of the disease and coping strategies of<br />

the patient and his/her family. Ms. Lea Glazer,<br />

ICA Assistant to the Director General, oversees<br />

the Research Committee.<br />

Two years ago, the children of the late Prof.<br />

Dafna Izraeli and the late Prof. Dov Izraeli,<br />

established the Israel Cancer Association Outstanding<br />

Researcher Fund in memory of their<br />

parents to confer a special increased research<br />

grant to an outstanding woman researcher, from<br />

among those awarded regular ICA research<br />

grants. This year, the grant was presented to<br />

Prof. Shulamit Katzav of the Hebrew University<br />

of Jerusalem for her research study on:<br />

the Involvement of the VAV Oncogene in the<br />

Development of Human Tumors.<br />
