When the statistics of the first question were compared with that of the second question, a higher level of compliance to request a physician's referral for the test emerged among those who knew someone who contracted the disease. About 86% of them would ask to perform the test, as compared to about 74% of those who did not know anyone who contracted colorectal cancer. Analysis of Public Attitudes among Jews and Arabs regarding Early Detection Survey Tests for Colorectal Cancer A new research study conducted by Dr. Feisel Asaize and Dr. Miri Cohen, of the School of Social Work in the Faculty of Social Welfare and Health Studies at Haifa University, examined the early detection colorectal cancer screening rate among Jews and Arabs aged 50-75 in Israel. The research study encompassed 510 Jews and Arabs, a representative sample of the adult population in Israel and surprising findings emerged regarding compliance to perform screening tests among the general population in Israel and its attitudes towards these tests. An analysis of the research study uncovered several findings: 45% of the Jewish interviewees reported that they had performed a screening test at one point in time, whereas the percentage was much lower (21%) among Arab interviewees. The Israel Cancer Association Marks the first Prostate Cancer Awareness Month in Israel on September 12, 2006 The Israel Cancer Association marked the first Prostate Cancer Awareness Month concomitant to the month marked by other countries around the globe. As this day approached, the ICA launched a radio and press campaign, calling upon the male population over the age of 50 to take an interest in the subject, ask questions, refer to a physician, and call the Telemeida teleinformation service. Additionally, lectures open to the public were delivered free of charge in collaboration with the Israel Urology Association, at ICA branches throughout the country. Prostate cancer is the most prevalent cancer among males in Israel. According to up to date statistics of the National Cancer Registry at the Ministry of Health, each year 2,250 new cases are diagnosed and about 380 men die from the disease. An older age and family history increase incidence rates. Family history of men with a father who contracted the disease, are at a twofold risk of contracting this type of cancer. Similarly, unhealthy nutrition habits, alcohol consumption, smoking and obesity are possible prevalence factors, however further research studies are required to reinforce this assertion. The prostate cancer morbidity rates have been steadily increasing over the past decade, and the older a person is, the higher his/her risk of contracting the disease. According to recommendations made by the National Council of Oncology, it is recommended to perform a combined TRUS + PSA test once a year from the age of 50 among the high risk population that has a family history of prostate cancer. 18 Updated Publications Knowing more about Myeloma Preventing Cancer - Guidelines for a Healthier Life Isreal Cancer Association Annual Report 2006 Special Television Public Service Announcement devoted to Prostate Cancer A T.V. program moderated by Billy Moscona Lerman and Ben Kaspit, devoted a program to prostate cancer that was aired in March-April on Channel 2 and Channel 23. Experts Miri Ziv, ICA Director General, Avivit Noiman, Prof. Ofer Netiv and Moshe Stern, a prostate cancer survivor, were panel guests. The Battle against Smoking The ICA continues to endeavor on all fronts to reduce the smoking rate and mitigate its harmful effects in Israel. Colleagues Seminar The ICA joined the Psychological Counseling Service at the Ministry of Health in a unique training program for youth in schools and junior high schools. As part of the training program, outstanding pupils who are social activists are chosen and trained to serve as social leaders and conduct smoking prevention related activities. The Training Dept. offers several ICA sponsored lectures about the training program, to be delivered by senior lecturers and students. This year, an unprecedented number of Colleague Seminars will take place all over Israel. The Israel Cancer Association and the IDF Combat Smoking The ICA, in association with the Military Health Section, prepared an advanced study course for dozens of paramedics from different IDF units, based on a format similar to that of the student-lecturer training delivered by the ICA. Following the advanced study course, these paramedics returned to their various units and got involved in educational and information activity related to smoking prevention within their units. The Military Health Section organizes the counselors' activity within the IDF, and provides them with educational materials from the ICA on various subjects. Assistance in Enforcing the Law Despite the fact that the ICA has no authority to enforce the ban on smoking in public places, the ICA is contacted by many citizens and receives numerous complaints about smoking in public places and in the workplace in violation of the law. The calls are received through the Telemeida teleinformation service or through the ICA website and following clarifications, the entities in question were sent letters of warning from the ICA requesting to comply with the law. The Israel Cancer Association and the Faculty of Dentistry Promote the Fight against Smoking The ICA and the Faculty of Dentistry at the Hadassah Medical Center Ein Karem have trained dozens of dentistry students and dental hygienists about smoking and its harmful effects, as part of the Faculty requirements, obligating future dentists and dental hygienists to discuss this subject with patients. This activity included lectures delivered to the students and distribution of ICA educational material, as well as visits to schools in the Jerusalem area where the students delivered training sessions on this subject to elementary and junior high school pupils. The Israel Council for the Prevention of Smoking The Israel Council for the Prevention of Smoking is a coalition of entities engaged in smoking prevention, to relay information, coordinate activities and concert efforts to reduce the rate of smoking and its harmful effects in Israel. Among the Council members are the Ministry of Health, the healthcare funds, the ICA, the Ministry of Education and IDF. Advocate Amos Hausner heads the Council, and the ICA Information and Education Dept. coordinates its activity.
