Seminar on Updates on<br />
Colorectal Cancer<br />
The ICA held a special seminar in March on updates<br />
on colorectal cancer at Gan Oranim in Tel Aviv.<br />
The seminar took place under the auspices of<br />
the Israel Association of Family Physicians, the<br />
Israel Gastroenterology Association, the Israel<br />
Board of Clinical Oncology and Radiotherapy,<br />
the Israel Society of Surgical Oncology and<br />
the Israel Society of Colon and Rectal Surgery.<br />
The first session dealt with prevention and early<br />
diagnosis. Dr. Micha Barhanna, Director of the<br />
National Cancer Registry lectured on epidemiology<br />
of colorectal cancer. Prof. G. Rennert, Director<br />
of the Dept. of Community Medicine at Carmel<br />
Medical Center lectured on etiology, primary and<br />
secondary prevention. Prof. N. Arber of Tel Aviv<br />
Medical Center lectured on chemical prevention.<br />
Prof. T. Fireman of Hillel Yaffe Medical Center<br />
lectured on endoscopial early detection methods<br />
and Dr. Y. Susana of Hadassah Medical Center<br />
Ein Karem lectured on virtual colonscopy. The<br />
second session dealt with surgical treatment of<br />
colorectal cancer. Ms. Aliza Yaffe, ICA Head<br />
Nurse lectured on the sequence of treatment of<br />
stoma patients. Dr. Y. Ziv of the Assaf Harofeh<br />
Medical Center lectured on surgery of the rectum<br />
– TME. Prof. A. Cherniak of Wolfson Medical<br />
Center lectured on liver metastases and Dr. Z.<br />
Sabag of Soroka Medical Center lectured on<br />
peritoneal metastases in the stomach lining. The<br />
third session dealt with oncological treatment<br />
of colorectal cancer. Dr. B. Brenner lectured<br />
on chemical treatment. Prof. A. Shani lectured<br />
on complementary treatment. Prof. A. Kuten of<br />
Rambam Medical Center lectured on radiation<br />
treatment of rectum cancer. Dr. A. Hubert of<br />
Hadassah Medical Center Ein Karem lectured<br />
on biological treatment and Prof. Dan Edreka<br />
of the Sheba Medical Center presented unique<br />
cases for discussion.<br />
<strong>Annual</strong> Conference of the Israel<br />
Society of Pediatric Hemato-oncology<br />
The annual conference of the Israel Society of<br />
Hemato-oncology and Blood Transfusions was<br />
held in March, during which Mrs. Miri Ziv, ICA<br />
Director General presented Dr. Michael Van<br />
Den Acker of the Dept. of Pediatric Hematology<br />
at Soroka Medical Center with the Israel Cancer<br />
Association Outstanding Specialist Award for<br />
<strong>2006</strong>.<br />
This prize is awarded as a token of appreciation<br />
and esteem for Dr. Van Den Acker's clinical<br />
and research activity that takes a humanitarian<br />
approach with patients and their families.<br />
Special Women's Meeting in Association<br />
with the Municipality<br />
of Herzliya and the Israeli Breast<br />
Cancer Coalition (IBBC)<br />
In early March and marking International Women's<br />
Day, a special meeting was held at the Air Force<br />
Auditorium in Herzliya with Mayor Mrs. Yael<br />
Gerrman in attendance. Mrs. Ruth Reznick,<br />
Chairperson of the Municipal Health Council<br />
emceed the evening. At the opening of the<br />
meeting greeting were delivered by Mayor, Yael<br />
Gerrman, Dr. Ilana Kadmon, Chairperson of the<br />
Israeli Breast Cancer Coalition, and Mrs. Miri<br />
Ziv, ICA Director General. Dr. Tanir Elweiss, a<br />
breast surgeon, lectured on rumors and facts<br />
about early detection of breast cancer, Dr. Naama<br />
Constantini, a sports physician, lectured about<br />
physical activity and women's health, and Ms.<br />
Livia Kislev, ICA Sexuality Consultant lectured<br />
on healthy sexuality. A meeting was held at the<br />
end of the meeting followed by a special artistic<br />
performance given by Tami Rimon, an ICA "Yad<br />
Lehachlama" (Reach to Recovery) volunteer.<br />
