Seminar on Updates on
Colorectal Cancer
The ICA held a special seminar in March on updates
on colorectal cancer at Gan Oranim in Tel Aviv.
The seminar took place under the auspices of
the Israel Association of Family Physicians, the
Israel Gastroenterology Association, the Israel
Board of Clinical Oncology and Radiotherapy,
the Israel Society of Surgical Oncology and
the Israel Society of Colon and Rectal Surgery.
The first session dealt with prevention and early
diagnosis. Dr. Micha Barhanna, Director of the
National Cancer Registry lectured on epidemiology
of colorectal cancer. Prof. G. Rennert, Director
of the Dept. of Community Medicine at Carmel
Medical Center lectured on etiology, primary and
secondary prevention. Prof. N. Arber of Tel Aviv
Medical Center lectured on chemical prevention.
Prof. T. Fireman of Hillel Yaffe Medical Center
lectured on endoscopial early detection methods
and Dr. Y. Susana of Hadassah Medical Center
Ein Karem lectured on virtual colonscopy. The
second session dealt with surgical treatment of
colorectal cancer. Ms. Aliza Yaffe, ICA Head
Nurse lectured on the sequence of treatment of
stoma patients. Dr. Y. Ziv of the Assaf Harofeh
Medical Center lectured on surgery of the rectum
– TME. Prof. A. Cherniak of Wolfson Medical
Center lectured on liver metastases and Dr. Z.
Sabag of Soroka Medical Center lectured on
peritoneal metastases in the stomach lining. The
third session dealt with oncological treatment
of colorectal cancer. Dr. B. Brenner lectured
on chemical treatment. Prof. A. Shani lectured
on complementary treatment. Prof. A. Kuten of
Rambam Medical Center lectured on radiation
treatment of rectum cancer. Dr. A. Hubert of
Hadassah Medical Center Ein Karem lectured
on biological treatment and Prof. Dan Edreka
of the Sheba Medical Center presented unique
cases for discussion.
Annual Conference of the Israel
Society of Pediatric Hemato-oncology
The annual conference of the Israel Society of
Hemato-oncology and Blood Transfusions was
held in March, during which Mrs. Miri Ziv, ICA
Director General presented Dr. Michael Van
Den Acker of the Dept. of Pediatric Hematology
at Soroka Medical Center with the Israel Cancer
Association Outstanding Specialist Award for
2006.
This prize is awarded as a token of appreciation
and esteem for Dr. Van Den Acker's clinical
and research activity that takes a humanitarian
approach with patients and their families.
Special Women's Meeting in Association
with the Municipality
of Herzliya and the Israeli Breast
Cancer Coalition (IBBC)
In early March and marking International Women's
Day, a special meeting was held at the Air Force
Auditorium in Herzliya with Mayor Mrs. Yael
Gerrman in attendance. Mrs. Ruth Reznick,
Chairperson of the Municipal Health Council
emceed the evening. At the opening of the
meeting greeting were delivered by Mayor, Yael
Gerrman, Dr. Ilana Kadmon, Chairperson of the
Israeli Breast Cancer Coalition, and Mrs. Miri
Ziv, ICA Director General. Dr. Tanir Elweiss, a
breast surgeon, lectured on rumors and facts
about early detection of breast cancer, Dr. Naama
Constantini, a sports physician, lectured about
physical activity and women's health, and Ms.
Livia Kislev, ICA Sexuality Consultant lectured
on healthy sexuality. A meeting was held at the
end of the meeting followed by a special artistic
performance given by Tami Rimon, an ICA "Yad
Lehachlama" (Reach to Recovery) volunteer.
