Research of the Israeli Genetic<br />

and Ovarian Cancer Consortium<br />

in Seattle; the study examined over 660 BRCA1<br />

and BRCA2 gene mutation carriers in Israel and<br />

the United States, showing that familial factors<br />

may have a significant impact on the risk of a<br />

specific malignancy in BRCA1 or BRCA2 carriers.<br />

This study received extensive coverage in<br />

the scientific journal of the Proceedings of the<br />

National Academy of Sciences of the U.S.A.<br />

Israeli Breast Implant Registry for<br />

Reconstruction Purposes<br />

The ICA has assisted in establishing an Israeli<br />

Breast Implant Registry of women who have<br />

undergone mastectomy and reconstruction<br />

with implants and is working towards integrating<br />

Israel's registry in the international registry<br />

network. Dr. Morris Topaz, Director of the Plastic<br />

Surgery Ward at Hillel Yaffe Hospital in Hadera,<br />

and Chairman of the International Breast Implant<br />

Registry, coordinates the Israeli registry.<br />

The Israel Society of Clinical Oncology and<br />

Radiotherapy and 6 genetic institutes engaged<br />

in cancer genetics, are performing a<br />

joint study on the Genetics of Breast and<br />

ovarian Cancer in Israel.<br />

The study is being conducted in several stages.<br />

The initial stage evaluates the level of risk of<br />

contracting breast cancer and ovarian cancer<br />

in BRCA1 and BRAC2 gene mutation carriers.<br />

The ICA finances this research, recognizing<br />

the significance of this collaboration between<br />

the institutions, which is anticipated to produce<br />

substantial results, significantly impacting and<br />

upgrading the quality of knowledge in this<br />

important subject. Prof. Lahad of Shaarei<br />

Tzedek Hospital is coordinating the research in<br />

collaboration with the Sheba, Rambam, Rabin,<br />

Sourasky and Carmel Medical Centers.<br />

The joint research was conducted under the<br />

direction of Prof. Efrat Levi-Lahad of the Genetics<br />

Unit at the Shaarei Tzedek Medical Center,<br />

representing the Israel Genetic Consortium, and<br />

Dr. Mary Claire King of Washington University
