ovarian cancer, and other cancers. Sometimes,
the damage may be irreparable, damaging the
woman's childbearing capacity or to ovulate,
and in certain cases, may lead to total loss of
fertility. The ICA is currently opening special support
groups in several regions throughout the
country, designed specifically for young women
coping with cancer. Each group will discuss the
emotional and environmental difficulties with which
young cancer patients contend, and will serve
as a source of support and provide women with
guidance and information. Membership is free
of charge. The groups are designed for women
who are 30-45 years old who have contracted
and who are coping with various cancer diseases
and have opened in several spots in Israel. In
the central region, a group led by ICA social
workers, Rachel Ofir and Orit Shapira, has
opened and in the northern region, a group led
by ICA social worker, Ariela Litvitz and Tatiana
Gleiser of the Oncology Institute at the Rebecca
Sieff Center in Safed, has opened.
Cooking Workshop for Cancer
Patients
The ICA held a unique cooking workshop for
people coping with cancer. The workshop was
conceived and led by Eilat Barak, a chef and
social worker by profession, and by Limor
Ben Haim, a dietician specializing in nutrition
for patients. The cooking classes afforded the
opportunity to transform engagement in "healthy
food" into a colorful, savory and tasty experience.
The ICA financed the workshop, including
food products that were used; the workshop
consisted of three sessions of three hours each
which were held in a large kitchen donated for
this purpose courtesy of "For Chef".
The recipes taught during the workshop combine
easy to prepare dishes for daily preparation with
festive and more complicated recipes, thereby
meeting the needs of those dealing with the
disease on a daily basis to contend with the
various situations they are up against. 14 cancer
patients participated in the workshop from
all over Israel, for a token fee. These sessions
facilitated activity combining a social encounter,
discussion and information and a lot of pleasure
from cooking.
Coming up: Support Group in the
worker Ariela Litvitz.
