70 Data Collection and Follow-up Isreal Cancer Association Annual Report 2006 The National Mammography Project The ICA initiated and assisted in establishing an infrastructure for mammography quality control as well as with the acquisition of new equipment for examination centers located throughout the country. Approximately 56 operating centers have the Ministry of Health’s approval of equipment quality and radiation levels, with the prerequisite that each center run regular tests to examine image quality and film development procedures. Forty-four mammography centers currently operate under clinical quality assurance, authorized within the framework of the joint ICA-Ministry of Health National Mammography Project. As part of this program, financed solely by the ICA, mammography centers have been computerized, and all test results undergo comparative data analysis performed by radiologists, surgeons and oncologists. To date, data has been collected on nearly two million tests. Prof. Gad Rennert heads this program. Following a discussion initiated by the ICA at a meeting of the Israel National Oncology Council, a special task committee was formed, which recommended rules of procedure reflecting further perspectives to be implemented by the Ministry of Health. Upgrading National Protocol of Childhood Acute Lymphatic Leukemia The ICA continues to provide financial aid to collect and process data on children afflicted with acute lymphatic leukemia, undergoing treatment according to the National Protocol, which is a unique extension of the German Protocol – BFM. All statistics are processed by the Department of Statistics at Tel Aviv University. Since the protocol’s inception 15 years ago, there are no longer any differences recorded in the survival rates of children afflicted with leukemia treated at the various medical centers. Nor are there any differences recorded between the survival rates of Jewish and Arab children afflicted with the disease. Over the past decade methods for detection of submicroscopic leukemia cells have been developed whereby intensive treatment in a group of patients at low risk for recurrence may be reduced, thus saving long-term treatment damage and enabling the detection of patients at high risk who require intensive treatment crucial to saving their lives. The ICA has assumed the task of assisting in the upgrade of this method until its effectiveness is proven. This year the ICA has approved additional financial assistance in order to enable the completion of the requirements for joining the International Protocol in 2007 for the treatment of Childhood Acute Lymphatic Leukemia. Childhood Cancer Registry Collaboration between the Israel Society for Pediatric Oncology and the American Pediatric Oncology Group and Other International Groups The Israel Society for Pediatric Oncology received permission from the American Children Cancer Group to join in the formulation of various treatment protocols. The ICA funds the part-time Data Manager post in the Pediatric-Oncology Departments of the Schneider Children’s Medical Center in Petah Tikva, Sheba Medical Center, Tel Hashomer, Rambam Medical Center in Haifa and Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem.
