workshop with Prof. Lea Beider summed up
the conference. Following lunch, the participants
parted full of excitement and full of praise for
the conference, wishing each other: "Same
time next year".
Workshops for New
"Yad Lehachlama" Volunteers
Two workshops were held this year for new
volunteers, led by Prof. Lea Beider and Ms.
Levana Cohen. The participants are volunteers
who have recently joined the "Yad Lehachlama"
ranks.
Meetings, Lectures and
Activities for the Welfare of
Cancer Patients
Activities held by "Beit Natan"
– an ICA supported Health Resources
and Support Center for
Female Cancer Patients
A convalescence vacation was held at the
end of February for religious women coping
with cancer, sponsored by Beit Natan, with
assistance from the ICA. The vacation was
held at Kfar Almog north of the Dead Sea, with
lectures, special meetings, art workshops,
exercise, support, spirituality and enrichment,
supplementary medicine, folk dancing, sing a
longs and a jeep tour.
Expanding Home Visits to Cancer
Patients in the Northern Region
Chairperson of the Kiryat Shmone Branch and
Upper Galilee, Mrs. Ruth Schwartz, initiated
the social work students group which began
operating this year, to assist in home visits,
answering phone calls, tutoring child cancer
patients and helping their families throughout
the region. The students will work on a volunteer
basis with back up from the Dept. Director Dr.
Shira Hentman and led by Northern Region
social worker Ariela Litvitz.
Collaboration between the ICA
and "Yedidut" Organization
In April collaboration was forged between the
ICA and "Yedidut" Organization, responsible for
social involvement of students, volunteers and
scholarships, in association with the various
foundations and organizations requiring volunteers
for community service. The "Yedidut" Organization
took in scholarship students under its wing
from the Mifal Hapais (Israel Lottery) Foundations
and contacted the ICA to enable them to hold
volunteer activity within the ICA framework. To
date, the ICA has taken in 20 students who work
in several tracks. Most of them volunteer at the
Radiation Institute at Tel Aviv Medical Center,
accompanying and supporting lone patients and
families who have a loved one with cancer. The
students receive professional and supportive
guidance from social worker Dalia Stern, of
the ICA Rehabilitation and Welfare Dept. and
their volunteer activity is supervised.
"Ma'agan" Beer Sheva
An ICA volunteer student has been assigned
to "Maagan" Beer Sheva which is a Support
Centre for cancer patients and their families
run in collaboration with the ICA. This student
is responsible for giving computer lessons at
the Center.
National Service Girls for Cancer
Patients
Young women in National Service work at
the Soroka and Barzilai Hospitals in Ashkelon
and are financed by the ICA. The girls assist the
paramedical staff as well as patients and their
families. The presence of the National Service
girls helps improve the quality of service provided
to cancer patients and their families.
