the conference. Following lunch, the participants<br />

parted full of excitement and full of praise for<br />

the conference, wishing each other: "Same<br />

Workshops for New<br />

"Yad Lehachlama" Volunteers<br />

Two workshops were held this year for new<br />

volunteers, led by Prof. Lea Beider and Ms.<br />

Levana Cohen. The participants are volunteers<br />

who have recently joined the "Yad Lehachlama"<br />

ranks.<br />

Activities held by "Beit Natan"<br />

– an ICA supported Health Resources<br />

and Support Center for<br />

Female Cancer Patients<br />

A convalescence vacation was held at the<br />

end of February for religious women coping<br />

with cancer, sponsored by Beit Natan, with<br />

assistance from the ICA. The vacation was<br />

held at Kfar Almog north of the Dead Sea, with<br />

lectures, special meetings, art workshops,<br />

exercise, support, spirituality and enrichment,<br />

supplementary medicine, folk dancing, sing a<br />

longs and a jeep tour.<br />

Expanding Home Visits to Cancer<br />

Patients in the Northern Region<br />

Chairperson of the Kiryat Shmone Branch and<br />

Upper Galilee, Mrs. Ruth Schwartz, initiated<br />

the social work students group which began<br />

operating this year, to assist in home visits,<br />

answering phone calls, tutoring child cancer<br />

patients and helping their families throughout<br />

the region. The students will work on a volunteer<br />

basis with back up from the Dept. Director Dr.<br />

Shira Hentman and led by Northern Region<br />

social worker Ariela Litvitz.<br />

Collaboration between the ICA<br />

and "Yedidut" Organization<br />

In April collaboration was forged between the<br />

ICA and "Yedidut" Organization, responsible for<br />

social involvement of students, volunteers and<br />

scholarships, in association with the various<br />

foundations and organizations requiring volunteers<br />

for community service. The "Yedidut" Organization<br />

took in scholarship students under its wing<br />

from the Mifal Hapais (Israel Lottery) Foundations<br />

and contacted the ICA to enable them to hold<br />

volunteer activity within the ICA framework. To<br />

date, the ICA has taken in 20 students who work<br />

in several tracks. Most of them volunteer at the<br />

Radiation Institute at Tel Aviv Medical Center,<br />

accompanying and supporting lone patients and<br />

families who have a loved one with cancer. The<br />

students receive professional and supportive<br />

guidance from social worker Dalia Stern, of<br />

the ICA Rehabilitation and Welfare Dept. and<br />

their volunteer activity is supervised.<br />

"Ma'agan" Beer Sheva<br />

An ICA volunteer student has been assigned<br />

to "Maagan" Beer Sheva which is a Support<br />

Centre for cancer patients and their families<br />

run in collaboration with the ICA. This student<br />

is responsible for giving computer lessons at<br />

the Center.<br />

National Service Girls for Cancer<br />

Patients<br />

Young women in National Service work at<br />

the Soroka and Barzilai Hospitals in Ashkelon<br />

and are financed by the ICA. The girls assist the<br />

paramedical staff as well as patients and their<br />

families. The presence of the National Service<br />

girls helps improve the quality of service provided<br />

to cancer patients and their families.<br />
