Second Joint American Israeli
Conference on Cancer
The Second Joint American Israeli Conference
on Cancer took place in June 2006 at the Renaissance
Hotel in Jerusalem. The conference
was initiated by Dr. Joseph Rosenblatt of
the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center
at the University of Miami Florida, who served
as Conference Chair, alongside Dr. Robert
Korngold of the Cansec Cancer Center at the
University of New Jersey and Dr. Hyam Levitsky
of the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer
Center in Baltimore Maryland. The conference,
sponsored by the ICA-USA Palm Beach Chapter
in Florida, engaged in research innovations and
new therapeutic approaches to various cancer
diseases. Four hundred Israeli and American
physicians and researchers participated in the
conference this year.
The conference held a festive dinner in memory
of Prof. Eldor and Prof. Mantzer in the King
David Hotel garden. Nobel prize laureate, Prof.
Andrew Shally of the Medical Center in Miami,
Florida spoke. Tami Rimon, an ICA volunteer
enchanted the audience with her songs.
Novartis Winsen Sileg sponsored the dinner.
There was very positive feedback regarding the
conference and it was decided to hold such
conferences in the future as well.

Medical Center wins special
Certificate of Appreciation during
the Annual European Conference
on Cancer
The Annual European Conference on Cancer held
in early November in Paris hosted over 10,000
delegates from across the globe, researchers
and physicians, who convened and exchanged
impressions and ideas, and were treated to a
wide range of enriching lectures on innovations
in cancer treatment and new related research
studies. The Oncology Unit at Rambam Medical
Center in Haifa, supported by the ICA, received
a special certificate of appreciation for serving
as a role model of combined oncological and
palliative care activity.
Upper Galilee Hospice, supported
by the ICA, wins prestigious international
prize for excellence in
team work awarded by IJPN and
Macmillan
At an impressive ceremony that was held at the
end of March in London, Britain, the upper Galilee
Hospice was declared first place winner of the
prestigious international prize for team work
in appreciation for the special and noteworthy
efforts of the Upper Galilee Hospice staff, under
the medical direction of Dr. Jim Shalom. The
awards ceremony was held at the Savoy Hotel
in London, with about one hundred guests and
local and foreign dignitaries in attendance. There
were those who arrived from countries such
as Scotland and as far away as Uganda. The
Upper Galilee Hospice staff was represented
by the Hospice Director Dr. Jim Shalom and
nurse Ms. Mazal Nitukar.
Dr. Jim Shalom recounted in his speech that
despite his pride in the work of the Upper Galilee
Hospice, its success is an Israeli success, and
it is due in part to the continuous support of
the ICA, which the Hospice has received since
its establishment to this very day. He thanked
the ICA for its support and its intensive efforts
to promote supportive care in many other settings
in Israel and also thanked all the entities
who assisted the staff in achieving high quality
in its work.
