Second Joint American Israeli<br />

Conference on Cancer<br />

The Second Joint American Israeli Conference<br />

on Cancer took place in June <strong>2006</strong> at the Renaissance<br />

Hotel in Jerusalem. The conference<br />

was initiated by Dr. Joseph Rosenblatt of<br />

the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center<br />

at the University of Miami Florida, who served<br />

as Conference Chair, alongside Dr. Robert<br />

Korngold of the Cansec Cancer Center at the<br />

University of New Jersey and Dr. Hyam Levitsky<br />

of the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer<br />

Center in Baltimore Maryland. The conference,<br />

sponsored by the ICA-USA Palm Beach Chapter<br />

in Florida, engaged in research innovations and<br />

new therapeutic approaches to various cancer<br />

diseases. Four hundred Israeli and American<br />

physicians and researchers participated in the<br />

conference this year.<br />

The conference held a festive dinner in memory<br />

of Prof. Eldor and Prof. Mantzer in the King<br />

David Hotel garden. Nobel prize laureate, Prof.<br />

Andrew Shally of the Medical Center in Miami,<br />

Florida spoke. Tami Rimon, an ICA volunteer<br />

enchanted the audience with her songs.<br />

Novartis Winsen Sileg sponsored the dinner.<br />

There was very positive feedback regarding the<br />

conference and it was decided to hold such<br />

conferences in the future as well.<br />

Oncology Unit at the Rambam<br />

Medical Center wins special<br />

Certificate of Appreciation during<br />

the <strong>Annual</strong> European Conference<br />

on Cancer<br />

The <strong>Annual</strong> European Conference on Cancer held<br />

in early November in Paris hosted over 10,000<br />

delegates from across the globe, researchers<br />

and physicians, who convened and exchanged<br />

impressions and ideas, and were treated to a<br />

wide range of enriching lectures on innovations<br />

in cancer treatment and new related research<br />

studies. The Oncology Unit at Rambam Medical<br />

Center in Haifa, supported by the ICA, received<br />

a special certificate of appreciation for serving<br />

as a role model of combined oncological and<br />

palliative care activity.<br />

Upper Galilee Hospice, supported<br />

by the ICA, wins prestigious international<br />

prize for excellence in<br />

team work awarded by IJPN and<br />

Macmillan<br />

At an impressive ceremony that was held at the<br />

end of March in London, Britain, the upper Galilee<br />

Hospice was declared first place winner of the<br />

prestigious international prize for team work<br />

in appreciation for the special and noteworthy<br />

efforts of the Upper Galilee Hospice staff, under<br />

the medical direction of Dr. Jim Shalom. The<br />

awards ceremony was held at the Savoy Hotel<br />

in London, with about one hundred guests and<br />

local and foreign dignitaries in attendance. There<br />

were those who arrived from countries such<br />

as Scotland and as far away as Uganda. The<br />

Upper Galilee Hospice staff was represented<br />

by the Hospice Director Dr. Jim Shalom and<br />

nurse Ms. Mazal Nitukar.<br />

Dr. Jim Shalom recounted in his speech that<br />

despite his pride in the work of the Upper Galilee<br />

Hospice, its success is an Israeli success, and<br />

it is due in part to the continuous support of<br />

the ICA, which the Hospice has received since<br />

its establishment to this very day. He thanked<br />

the ICA for its support and its intensive efforts<br />

to promote supportive care in many other settings<br />

in Israel and also thanked all the entities<br />

who assisted the staff in achieving high quality<br />

in its work.<br />
