25 The International Union against Cancer, UICC, represented in Israel by the ICA, launched a global campaign in early February 2006 with the aim of increasing global awareness about cancer. According to the International Union against Cancer's decision, the campaign focused on many aspects of the war against cancer, such as: steps to increase public awareness through a long term plan including conveying information, educating toward a healthy lifestyle, conveying messages through the media channels and placing a special emphasis on prevention, early detection, diagnosis and treatment. The global campaign places an emphasis on the need for a focused strategy to introduce behavioral changes in society. The International Union against Cancer intends to mark this campaign each year and focus on a different subject each time. This year the campaign focused on cancer among children, under the slogan "my child matters", in order to increase awareness about cancer among children and youth from age 0 to 18. As part of the campaign, all entities that are organization members all over the world, including the ICA in Israel, were requested to report to the organization and publish information about their endeavors on behalf of children who have cancer. On the day the campaign was launched, the ICA aired public service announcements on all TV channels through Gitam/BBDO, with the objective of inviting cancer patients, their families and the general population to refer to the ICA for information. The ICA initiates and offers many services for the welfare of children with cancer, as specified in the Chapter on Rehabilitation and Welfare. The ICA Enlists Perah in Promoting Health and Cancer Prevention The Information and Education Dept. delivered training to coordinators of the "Helath Education" project of Perah Organization; in these training sessions lectures were given on the significant role of educational activity in preventing smoking and sun exposure among youth and school pupils. The coordinators also received educational material from the ICA, which they and many other students involved in the Health Education project used in their activity in schools, whereby the number of pupils hearing smoking and sun exposure prevention lectures significantly increased. "Don't Remove Cancer Patients from the Budget Framework…nor from the Framework for Life!" The ICA joins the struggle of cancer patients to include new life saving medications in the drug package Prof. Eliezer Robinson, ICA Chairman, and Mrs. Miri Ziv, ICA Director General, wrote a letter personally addressed to the Minister of Finance and Deputy Prime Minister, regarding the health package for 2006. In their letter, they requested to immediately reevaluate the budgetary priorities of the Israeli government and of the Ministry of Finance, because there can be no argument that outweighs the imperative to save lives! 26 פירסומים שעודכנו Booklet of Chefs' Recipes for Healthy Nutrition As the flag bearer of increasing awareness of proper nutrition, and of the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, the ICA Marketing Dept. produced a special booklet containing Chefs' healthy recipes as part of the Passover mailing sent to ICA supporters. Israel's leading chefs offered their assistance, contributing their vast experience and their recipes: Haim Cohen, Chef on the Cooking Program: "Garlic, Pepper and Olive Oil", Amir Kalfon, Chef of "Ye'arot Hacarmel", Eiran Shtroitman, Chef of "Orca" Restaurant, Guta and Guy Ben Simchon, Chefs of "La Guta" Restaurant, Adoni Meir, Chef of Katit Restaurant, Nir Tzuk, Chef of Cordelia Noa and Gafa Bar restaurants, Ran Shmueli, Chef of Shmueli Catering, Shalom Kadosh, Chef of the Sheraton Plaza Hotel, Victor Gloger, Chef of Cloalis Restaurant, Yoram Nitzan, Chef of Mul Hayam Restaurant, and Daniel Zach, Chef of Carmela Banahala Restaurant. The booklet also contains tips on healthy nutrition and the chefs' recommendations for healthy cooking. The booklet entered the ICA publications database and is distributed free of charge to the general public. Isreal Cancer Association Annual Report 2006 subject in conjunction with the Israeli Society for Clinical Oncology and Radiotherapy; later on additional letters were formulated, one of them written along with the Directors of other large non profit social welfare organizations. The ICA, working in close collaboration with the National Oncology Council, played a significant role in gaining the many achievements that were accomplished in the inclusion of oncological drugs in the health package. Joint Activity with Science Seeking Youth Group In an attempt to expand its activities and influence, the Information and Education Dept. has begun joint activity with the Science Seeking Youth Group. As part of this activity, geared toward elementary to high school pupils, ICA counselors will join in on cancer related activities, smoking and sun exposure prevention, and they will hold joint seminars with senior lecturers under the auspices of the ICA. Avi Etgar Headed National Campaign for the Collection of Fountain Pens for the ICA Broadcaster Avi Etgar, launched a national campaign to collect fountain pens from the general population for the ICA, on his program "Etgar's Choice Selection", which airs on Saturday afternoon on Reshet Bet on the Voice of Israel (Israel's official radio station). This collection campaign was held with assistance from "IPC – the Israel Pen Club". The pens were renewed and artistically redesigned by pen experts from the "Israel Pen Club" who breathed new life into them, and were then auctioned and sold to the highest bidder. The proceeds from the public auction went to the ICA towards the fight against cancer diseases in Israel. ICA wins Roaring Lion Award in the Non-Profit Organizations Category For the second year in a row, the ICA won First Place in the Non-Profit Organizations Category and was presented with the Roaring Lion Award at the annual event held by the public relations industry in Israel, initiated by the Israel Public Relations and Spokespersonship Association. The prize which was presented to Nava Inbar, ICA Spokesperson, was awarded for the PR campaign for the ICA Mobile Mammography Unit as well as for the PR for the Annual Door Knock Fundraising Campaign 2005. The prize was awarded in early July at a special event convening the public relations industry in Israel, at the new Cameri Theater Auditorium in Tel Aviv. This competition aims to promote excellence among those engaged in public relations, spokespersonship and media consultation in Israel. PR campaigns implemented during 2005 were submitted in the competition. At the event, 11 Roaring Lion awards were presented to campaign according to various categories, and the winners were presented with the Roaring Lion statuette, designed by sculptor and PR man, Moshe Dayan. The winner of the Campaign of the Year Award was the Israeli Teachers Struggle for a Reform in the Education System, a campaign conducted by Gitam Porter Novelli, on behalf of the Israel Teachers Union. This campaign was selected out of all the campaigns that won in different categories. The ICA won an International Prize Awarded by the Center for Association Leadership The ICA won a very prestigious prize for its endeavors in the fight against cancer in Israel, presented by the Center for Association Leadership in the United States, which engages in empowering leading organizations and associations throughout the globe. Each year, the Center for Association Leadership awards prizes to social welfare organizations and associations across the globe that have accomplished outstanding achievements with the aim of creating a better world.
