5.5.2 S<strong>to</strong>rage, transport <strong>and</strong> re<strong>gas</strong>ification<br />
S<strong>to</strong>rage at the terminals <strong>and</strong> on LNG carriers is done in cryogenic tanks at<br />
atmospheric pressure or slightly above, up <strong>to</strong> 125 kPa. The tanks are<br />
insulated, but will not keep LNG cold enough <strong>to</strong> avoid evaporation. Heat<br />
leakage will heat <strong>and</strong> b<strong>oil</strong> off the LNG. Therefore LNG is s<strong>to</strong>red as a b<strong>oil</strong>ing<br />
cryogen, which means that the liquid is s<strong>to</strong>red at its b<strong>oil</strong>ing point for its<br />
s<strong>to</strong>rage pressure (atmospheric pressure), i.e., about -162 ºC. As the vapor<br />
b<strong>oil</strong>s off, heat of vaporization is absorbed from <strong>and</strong> cools the remaining<br />
liquid. The effect is called au<strong>to</strong>-refrigeration. With efficient insulation, only a<br />
relatively small amount of b<strong>oil</strong>-off is necessary <strong>to</strong> maintain temperature. B<strong>oil</strong>off<br />
<strong>gas</strong> from l<strong>and</strong>-based LNG s<strong>to</strong>rage tanks is compressed <strong>and</strong> fed <strong>to</strong> natural<br />
<strong>gas</strong> pipeline networks. On LNG carriers, the b<strong>oil</strong>-off <strong>gas</strong> can be used for fuel.<br />
