Widows’ House<br />
Zbudowany został w 1683 r. z inicjatywy<br />
i funduszy księcia Sylwiusza Fryderyka<br />
Wirtemberskiego. Dom ten służył wdowom<br />
i ich rodzinom po zmarłych pastorach ewangelickich.<br />
Zlokalizowany został naprzeciw kościoła<br />
NMP, który w tym czasie był kościołem<br />
ewangelickim. W XIX w. nadbudowano drugie<br />
piętro, a dach został podniesiony.<br />
W maju 1945 r. Dom Wdów spłonął, pozostały<br />
wypalone mury. Ok. 1956 r. rozebrano<br />
mury drugiego piętra, zachowując pozostałość<br />
do planowanej odbudowy. Obiekt został<br />
odbudowany w latach 1960-1964 na potrzeby<br />
ówczesnego ogniska muzycznego.<br />
Dziś w budynku mają swoją siedzibę Państwowa<br />
Szkoła Muzyczna I stopnia i Ognisko<br />
Muzyczne Dolnośląskiego Towarzystwa Muzycznego.<br />
Przed szkołą, na skwerku stoi popiersie<br />
Fryderyka Chopina. Ustawiono je na dużym<br />
cokole, pozostałym po pomniku kanclerza Cesarstwa<br />
Niemieckiego Otto von Bismarcka.<br />

It was built in 1683 on the initiative and<br />
the funds of Duke Silvius Frederic of Württemberg.<br />
It was located in front of the joint churches<br />
of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. George<br />
which were used by the Evangelical Church at<br />
that time. The house was inhabited by widows<br />
of the pastors and the teachers. In the 19th<br />
century the second floor was added and at the<br />
beginning of the 20 th century the house was<br />
covered with a mansard roof with more rooms<br />
underneath.<br />
The Widows’ House was destroyed during<br />
German air-raid, only burnt-down walls remained.<br />
In 1956 the walls of the second floor<br />
were demolished, the rest of the building was<br />
kept for future reconstruction. The object was<br />
reconstructed in 1960-1964 for the needs of the<br />
contemporary community music centre.<br />
Today it is the seat of State School of Music<br />
(1st level) and the Music Centre of the Lower<br />
Silesian Music Society.<br />
There is a bust of Frederic Chopin on the square<br />
in front of the school. It stands on a large<br />
socle which remained from the monument of<br />
the Chancellor of the German Empire, Otto von<br />
Bismarck.<br />
