VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES
CU CHANGE
CU Change is a student-initiated volunteer
group that serves the community of Steinbach
and the South Eastman region. CU change
volunteers help out on a variety of projects that
change from year to year but all share the focus
of reaching out to others in the community at
large. Initiatives range from volunteer service at
the hospital, food drives and fundraisers to
awareness campaigns.
COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS
Community volunteers are those students that
work directly with outside (non-school) agencies
on an un-paid basis. These volunteer activities
vary greatly. Some examples from the Steinbach
area would include; MCC, personal care homes
and Steinbach 55 plus.
ENVIRONMENT CLUB
The SRSS environment club is a collection of
students that are motivated to change their
world. Students in the environment club are
constantly examining their personal impact on
the environment and their use of resources with
responsibility and sustainability in mind.
PEER MENTORING
The Peer Mentorship program at the SRSS is
about making connections with other students.
Students will aid counselling staff in hosting
school events and will serve as part of the front
line for students that are in need of help. Peer
mentors should be comfortable relating to and
sharing with other students in a one-on-one
setting or in small groups.
PEER TUTORING
Peer tutors help their fellow students who may
be struggling in their academic subjects. Peer
tutors operate out of three locations, two are
here at the school in L1 and G8 (resource class
rooms), the other location is at the Steinbach
Junior High. Peer tutors should have a good
grasp of the subject material in their core
courses and a willingness to help.
PHILANTHROPY 101
Philanthropy 101 is a student group focussed on
what they can do for their fellow humankind.
Philanthropy literally means “mankind loving”.
Every year the school is given a $2,000 grant
from the Loewen Foundation. Students
brainstorm to create a list of values and then
interview various charities that match up with
those values. The group comes to a consensus
about which charity should receive the funds,
and a celebration dinner is held at the end of the
program, allowing the various schools involved
to share their philanthropic journey and to
celebrate the heart of giving.
SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
Do you want a chance at the experience of a
lifetime? An SRSS social responsibility group
might be for you. Developed through community
partnerships and school-based groups (like CU
change) social responsibility initiatives take
students to places they would not have dreamed
they could go. One recent initiative that has
involved SRSS students and staff is the
Manitoba-to-Ecuador project.
SPIRIT COMMITTEE
The SRSS Spirit committee is a group of
students committed to making the SRSS school
experience the very best it can be. To that end
they are involved in planning and putting on
school events that both entertain and inspire
students to yet higher levels of school spirit.
SPORTS LEADERSHIP
The Sports leadership group assists the phys ed
staff in the promoting, hosting and documenting
the variety of sporting events that occur at the
SRSS over the course of the school year.
Students might be linesmen, score-keepers,
team managers or videographers. Sports
leaders support SRSS athletics in many ways.
STUDENT COUNCIL
The SRSS student council is a group of student
leaders who represent the student body’s wants
and desires for their school. The student council
fundraises for special projects through events
like the Christmas Toy Drive and talent shows.
It is open to all students who want to make a
difference for others in both our school and the
wider community. Student council is overseen
by staff advisors, but the events are planned and
put on by the students themselves.
STUDENT VOICE
The student voice group also represents the
general student body. This group is randomly
selected for the breadth of their opinions and
can impact school policy based on their
feedback in voluntary surveys. In the past,
students have also given presentations to
teachers and the school board about their
school experiences.
SWAT
The SWAT team is a student group that gives
information sessions about the dangers of
smoking and serves as a peer advisor group for
those who have quit the habit or desire to quit
sometime in the future. SWAT stands for
Students Working Against Tobacco.
