being challenged. This request must be
cleared with the student’s parents, the school
counsellor, and the course instructor who will
initially conduct a brief oral interview in the target
language. If the request to challenge for credit
is granted, the student will be required to attain a
minimum mark of 65% on an exam which will be
comprised of both a written and speaking
component, plus any additional assessments
that the instructor deems necessary. If the
challenge is successful, credit will be given after
the student has completed the next higher level
of the program as a regular, in-class course. No
challenge for credit will be allowed at the Grade
12 level. No challenge for credit will be
granted for students who have been enrolled
past the one-week mark in the course.
Students have only one opportunity per course
to challenge for credit.

Prerequisite: Sincere Interest
This course involves singing choral music in
many styles — from Bach to gospel to new and
current music. Music theory is taught, aural skills
are worked on and some small assignments are
given, but most of the time is spent singing.
Interest is of prime importance. Participation and
individual musical growth are emphasized. The
year’s activities include several concerts, and
participation in the Fall concert, Christmas
concert, Spring Concert and local festivals. The
course runs for half a period every day through
both semesters. Attendance is vital in this
course as concerts are outside of the timetable.
Concerts must be attended and participated in
as part of the curriculum.
Cost: $40 for a concert uniform which should
last through to graduation.

A continuation of MUC 20G. For information see

Within the MUC30S & MUC40S lies another
choir. The SRSS Chamber Choir is an
auditioned group of about 30-40 singers. These
students will give of their extra time to work at a
high level and includes more performances in
the school year in the surrounding communities
and offers travel opportunities periodically. For
the Chamber Choir each student will receive 1
credit per school year (MUE31G and MUE41G)
on their final report card for their extra time
given. The allotment of time equals that of a full
class.

Prerequisite: MUB10G or an audition plus a
sincere interest in playing in a team environment
The Band course is a performing concert band
that achieves most of its educational goals
through the study of and performance of concert
band literature. Class time is also used to study
theory, history, and different philosophies of
music as it relates to the world around us.
Enrolling in this course carries with it the
expectation that you will make every effort to
attend all rehearsals and concerts as well as
personal practice on an on-going basis
throughout the year. It is strongly
discouraged to register for only half the
year.

Prerequisite: Audition and MUC20G
This course is open to singers who wish to
develop their musicianship in an intensive
rehearsal situation. Ensemble enrolment will be
limited to 16, so each member’s talents will be
amply called upon to develop and mature, and
to perform in cooperation with other enthusiastic
choral musicians. The main emphasis in this
course will be on vocal jazz singing and
