Biology 30S is an essential component of the
study of Life Science. It is an intensive
introduction to the study of Human Biology
particularly, with strong emphasis on the various
anatomical and physiological systems of the
human body. It is an important component in
Life Science studies that lead to careers in
medicine, pharmacy and others. In addition,
Biology 30S is designed for those students who
simply want to increase their knowledge of the
Life Sciences.
Forensic Topics in Science SCI30S
Dept. of Ed. Code 0139-30S Credit: 1
Prerequisite: Gr. 10 Science
This course is student and inquiry centered with
a primary focus on laboratory investigations and
writing. Topics in Forensic Science 30S focuses
on the application of science to the law and
encompasses various scientific disciplines. This
course will introduce various methodologies and
applications used in the forensic context.
Students will look at how instrumentation is
used, what type of evidence it can process, how
to read the results and the properties of the
chemical and physical evidence. Topics
discussed include, but are not limited to: types of
evidence, DNA analysis, forensic anthropology,
fingerprinting, hair analysis and document
analysis. This course is open to students in
grades 10-12 who meet the prerequisite.
Chemistry
CHM30S
Dept. of Ed. Code 0122-30S Credit: 1
Prerequisite: SCI20F, MAP20S
This course is designed to introduce and
develop some of the basic concepts in
chemistry, and to promote an understanding of
the relationship between chemistry, technology
and their impact upon the individual and society.
Content includes a review of atomic theory, the
Periodic Table and the elements, as well as
chemical compounds and bonding. Extensive
treatment is dedicated to the mole concept and
chemical reactions, the physical nature of gases,
solutions, and an introduction to organic
chemistry. This course is a prerequisite for
continued study in Chemistry 40S.
Physics
PHY30S
Dept. of Ed. Code 0123-30S Credit: 1
Prerequisite: SCI20F, MAP20S
This course seeks to foster a sense of
enthusiasm and competence for physics.
Students will study a range of topics starting with
background skills, then study of motion in 1
dimension, forces in 1 and 2 dimensions, field
theory, and concluding with waves and sound.
Physics is a true foundation science, and as a
result, most students find value in the concepts
learned, as they relate directly to everyday
experiences, and to some of the technical
aspects of our courses they have studied. This
course is a prerequisite for continued study in
Physics 40S.
Biology
BIO40S
Dept. of Ed. Code 0124-40S Credit: 1
Prerequisite: BIO30S
Human existence is closely intertwined with the
existence of other organisms living on Earth. It
is through the study of biology that humans can
expect to understand how to preserve the health
of our planet and all organisms that call it home.
The following topics will be covered: DNA and its
role in cell function and genetics, Evolutionary
Theory, and the Organization, Classification and
Conservation of Biodiversity (the variety of living
species in an area). The course demands daily
study/review and the memorization of many new
terms.
Chemistry
CHM40S
Dept. of Ed. Code 0122-40S Credit: 1
Prerequisite: CHM30S, MAM30S or MPC30S
Chemistry 40S is designed to provide a firm
grounding in the concepts and processes of
chemistry, an understanding of the factors which
influence the application of chemical principles.
The course is an often requested prerequisite for
many continued studies at the post-secondary
level. As such, it offers excellent preparation for
continued study, and will prepare the successful
candidate for the rigors of a top-level science
course. Topics covered are: electronic
structure, bonding, reaction rates, chemical
equilibrium, acids and bases, solubility, and
oxidation-reduction reactions.
Physics
PHY40S
Dept. of Ed. Code 0123-40S Credit: 1
Prerequisite: PHY30S & MPC30S or MAM30S
Physics 40S continues the study started in the
30S course, and provides students with a
thorough preparation for study in a variety of
disciplines at the postsecondary level. A variety
of new topics include motion and forces in twodimensions,
conservation laws including
conservation of energy and momentum (two of
the most commonly employed ideas in science),
electric forces and fields, electric circuits,
magnetism and electromagnetic induction. The
topics serve as the fundaments for a wide
