The Rebaspinoff projects (part of the PRIME Network of Excellence). The research projects focus
on research based spinoffs. Within these projects data on spin-offs have been collected, but there
is no consistent database built.

List of specifi c studies on this issue
Germany. The ZEW (Zentrum für Europäische Wirtschaftsforschung) has performed a study into
spin offs. This report (Gründungen aus Hochschulen und der öffentlichen Forschung) provides
quantitative data on spin offs of universities and research institutes in Germany in the period 1996
till 2000 and gives information on their economic success. 20.000 companies participated in a
survey.
The Netherlands. The Ministry of Economic Affairs published a report on spin-offs. The information in
that study refers mainly to the Dutch situation although there are a number of international benchmark
institutions described. There are no hard data: they are based on self-reported institutional data in
interviews with experts and stakeholders.
UK. HEFCE administers an annual Higher education-business and community interaction survey.
In the latest version data on a number of knowledge transfer indicators are presented for each
institution separately:
1. Income from collaborative research
2. Number of consultancy contracts
3. Income from regeneration and development programmes
4. Patents fi led
5. Spinoffs
6. Free events (exhibitions etc.)

Indicator 6b: The number of patent applications filed
There is a European database on patents (http://nl.espacenet.com)
This database is not limited to higher education institutions and the number of patents awarded to
them or researchers working there. The data on industry based indicators need to be fi ltered out.
There is an issue of national context here. The ownership of patents differs between countries.
Whether a patent is owned by the university or the individual researcher may have an impact on the
results from the analyses or the effort that needs to be put in for extracting the correct information
from the database.
The Support Group for Research and Innovation at the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium
(SIOO) has databases on this dimension.

Indicator 6d: Revenues from privately funded research contracts as a % of total research
revenues
Most international databases that have information on this indicator are at the aggregated (national)
level. There is one research project, funded by the EC 5 in which the income of a sample of universities
in six countries is analysed (the CHINC- project). The dataset comprises data on 100 institutions
for the period 1995 till 2003 on income by source. The data originate from national data sources.
