Description<br />
Professional services cover a vast range of consultancy or advisory service<br />
activities in <strong>the</strong> areas of human resources, financial, legal and general<br />
management consultancy. While <strong>the</strong>re is overlap between <strong>the</strong> sub-sectors,<br />
much of <strong>the</strong> advice is highly specific in nature requiring well qualified<br />
specialists. The sector contains a wide range of companies from well known<br />
global firms to smaller local providers.<br />
According to <strong>the</strong> Annual Business Inquiry <strong>the</strong> sector had a turnover of<br />
£76bn in 2006, mostly supplying <strong>the</strong> private sector. By way of illustration 9<br />
per cent of PwC’s UK revenues are from <strong>the</strong> government or public sector,<br />
but some companies will have a much higher proportion of public sector<br />
work, and o<strong>the</strong>rs exclusively supply <strong>the</strong> private sector. OGC estimate<br />
current public spend on consultancy of £2.8bn.<br />
2.25 The larger companies that supply <strong>the</strong>se service segments are mostly well known. The<br />
following table lists a selection of PSI providers from <strong>the</strong> commercial and third sector.<br />

activity. Elsewhere <strong>the</strong> largest firms by revenue are reported using publicly available<br />
