2.26 The key characteristics of <strong>the</strong> supply side are:<br />

There are a large number of companies competing in <strong>the</strong> PSI market. While<br />
some segments are highly specialised (e.g. running defence installations or<br />
providing complex legal advice), in general, <strong>the</strong> sector has considerable depth.<br />
For example, <strong>the</strong>re are 123,380 VAT-registered businesses in <strong>the</strong> category ‘public<br />
admin and o<strong>the</strong>r services’ and an additional 475,845 VAT-registered businesses<br />
in <strong>the</strong> category of ‘property and business services’. These two categories account<br />
for nearly 38 per cent of all UK VAT registered businesses but many do not<br />
undertake work for public sector clients. Many are small: 51 per cent of <strong>the</strong>se<br />
businesses have a turnover of less than £100k 20 .<br />
