Al-Dhahabi said in al-Mooqizah (82),<br />

"Judging narrators requires a great deal <strong>of</strong> piety <strong>and</strong> freedom<br />

from whims <strong>and</strong> desires <strong>and</strong> bias, along with complete<br />

experience in <strong>the</strong> science <strong>of</strong> hadeeth <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> faults <strong>and</strong> narrators<br />

<strong>the</strong>re<strong>of</strong>."<br />

Al-Mu'allimi (rahimahullah) said in al-Tankeel (1/54),<br />

"The imams <strong>of</strong> hadeeth are knowledgeable <strong>and</strong> careful,<br />

<strong>and</strong><strong>the</strong>y strive to avoid mistakes, but <strong>the</strong>y differ with regard to<br />

that."<br />

Fourthly: Yes, none <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m is infallible <strong>and</strong> it is possible that <strong>the</strong>re<br />

may be mistakes in what some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m say. It is also possible that <strong>the</strong><br />

cause <strong>of</strong> some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se mistakes may be love or hate for someone.<br />

Some things <strong>of</strong> that nature did indeed happen, for no human being<br />

can be entirely free <strong>of</strong> that. But that should not be a reason for<br />

doubting all <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir judgements, <strong>and</strong> this is for <strong>the</strong> following reasons:<br />

1 – Because <strong>the</strong>se are a few mistakes when compared with <strong>the</strong><br />

great legacy that <strong>the</strong> leading scholars <strong>of</strong> hadeeth <strong>and</strong> al-<br />

jarh wa'l-ta'deel<br />

have left behind, <strong>the</strong> vast majority <strong>of</strong><br />

which is based on honesty <strong>and</strong> fairness, so it is unfair to<br />

overlook that because <strong>of</strong> a few mistakes.<br />

2 – Because <strong>the</strong> scholars highlighted <strong>the</strong>se mistakes <strong>and</strong><br />

pointed <strong>the</strong>m out in <strong>the</strong>ir comments. Whatever <strong>the</strong> motive<br />

was, whe<strong>the</strong>r it was enmity, envy or a difference <strong>of</strong><br />

madhhab, <strong>the</strong>y would reject unfair judgements <strong>and</strong> would<br />

issue fair judgements concerning a specific narrator.<br />
