1. According to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Modernists</strong>, thinking <strong>and</strong> values <strong>of</strong> a<br />
society are closely related to its environment <strong>and</strong> historic<br />
circumstances, <strong>and</strong> it is necessary to adapt <strong>and</strong> adjust <strong>the</strong><br />
religion to <strong>the</strong> requirements <strong>and</strong> necessities <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> times.<br />
Thus archaic interpretations <strong>and</strong> underst<strong>and</strong>ings must be altered to<br />
suit modern society. They argue that <strong>the</strong> people at <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Prophet did what <strong>the</strong>y believed suited <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong> best, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> people<br />
today must act as is suitable to modern times.<br />
For example, with regards to <strong>the</strong> hadeeth, "No people will ever<br />
prosper who place a woman in authority over <strong>the</strong>m."<br />
Dr. Yusuf al-Qaradawi says,<br />
"This is limited to <strong>the</strong> era <strong>of</strong> Messenger ,<br />
when <strong>the</strong><br />
rule was for <strong>the</strong> men with absoluteness, but not now!!'<br />
Muhammad Abduh writes concerning <strong>the</strong> issue <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> permissible<br />
number <strong>of</strong> wives for a man,<br />
"It is required from <strong>the</strong> ulama to revise this issue…<br />
<strong>the</strong> Deen was revealed for <strong>the</strong> welfare <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> people <strong>and</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong>ir good <strong>and</strong> its basis is to prevent harm <strong>and</strong><br />
destruction. So if <strong>the</strong>re is something causing<br />
corruption at an age that was not such<br />
previously, <strong>the</strong>n without doubt <strong>the</strong><br />
ruling should be changed <strong>and</strong><br />
modified in accordance with<br />
<strong>the</strong> present."<br />
