Hammad ibn Abi Haneefa related, "My fa<strong>the</strong>r (i.e., Imam Abu Hanifa<br />
rahimahullah) entered upon me one day <strong>and</strong> accompanying me<br />
was a group <strong>of</strong> Ashab al-Kalaam; <strong>and</strong> we were arguing at a door.<br />
So when I heard him approaching <strong>the</strong> house, I went out to him.<br />
He asked me, 'O Hammad, who is with you?’<br />
I replied, 'So <strong>and</strong> so,' <strong>and</strong> I named those who were with me.<br />
He <strong>the</strong>n advised me, 'O Hammad, ab<strong>and</strong>on Kalaam.'<br />
He (Hammad) says, 'My fa<strong>the</strong>r was nei<strong>the</strong>r a man who confused<br />
matters, nor was he from those who comm<strong>and</strong> something <strong>and</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong>n prohibit it.' So I asked him, 'O fa<strong>the</strong>r did you not used to<br />
comm<strong>and</strong> me with it?’<br />
He said, 'Yes, my son <strong>and</strong> today I prohibit you from it.'<br />
Hammad said, 'Why is that?'<br />
He said, 'Verily, <strong>the</strong>se are people <strong>of</strong> Kalaam - you will see <strong>the</strong>y were<br />
upon one statement <strong>and</strong> one religion until Shaytan came<br />
between <strong>the</strong>m <strong>and</strong> sow discord <strong>and</strong> differing…'<br />
Despite Imam Abu Hanifa's condemnation <strong>of</strong> Kalaam; many <strong>of</strong> those<br />
who claim to follow his madhhab like <strong>the</strong> Maturidis <strong>and</strong> Deob<strong>and</strong>is<br />
continue <strong>the</strong>ir indulgence in Kalaam.<br />
