Mu'tazilah comes from <strong>the</strong> word, 'I'tazaal', i.e., 'to<br />

withdraw.' The group is named such because its founder<br />

'Waasil Ibn Ataa' withdrew ( I'tazala)<br />

from <strong>the</strong> study<br />

circles <strong>of</strong> Hassan al-Basri after proposing an innovative<br />

idea on <strong>the</strong> status <strong>of</strong> Muslims who commit major sins (i.e.<br />

whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>y are believers or disbelievers). From <strong>the</strong>n on<br />

<strong>the</strong> Mu'tazilah deviated fur<strong>the</strong>r <strong>and</strong> increased in<br />

misguidance under <strong>the</strong> influence <strong>of</strong> Ilmul-Kalaam in<br />

many issues <strong>of</strong> belief;<br />

1. Five innovated Usool (principles) <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Mu'tazilah<br />

I) Tawheed<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mu'tazilah<br />

(Oneness <strong>of</strong> Allah) which according to <strong>the</strong><br />

Mu'tazilah is complete denial <strong>of</strong> Allah's Attributes.<br />

Their <strong>the</strong>ory <strong>of</strong> belief concerning Allah's Names is<br />

approval by <strong>the</strong> tongue <strong>and</strong> rejection by <strong>the</strong> heart; i.e., <strong>the</strong>y<br />

merely affirm <strong>the</strong> Names without affirming any meaning for<br />

<strong>the</strong>m. For example, <strong>the</strong>y affirm by <strong>the</strong> tongue that Allah is<br />

'As-Samee (All-Hearer),' but reject True Hearing for Him.<br />
