astray concerning <strong>the</strong> Attributes <strong>of</strong> Allah; Jahmiyah, Mu'tazilah <strong>and</strong><br />
Asha'irah who ei<strong>the</strong>r denied or misinterpreted <strong>the</strong> Names <strong>and</strong><br />
Attributes <strong>of</strong> Allah instead <strong>of</strong> accepting <strong>the</strong>m without reservations.<br />
Ibn Hajr (rahimahullah) writes in Sharh al-Bukharee,<br />
"…The Salaf intensified <strong>the</strong>ir rejection <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se trends, such<br />
as Abu Haneefah, Abu Yusuf <strong>and</strong> ash-Shafa'ee <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
refutation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ahlul-Kalaam is well known. The reason behind<br />
such severe censure is that <strong>the</strong> Ahlul-Kalaam discussed issues<br />
concerning which Allah's Messenger <strong>and</strong> his Sahabah had<br />
acquired silence.<br />
Those who came after <strong>the</strong> three generations, magnified upon<br />
<strong>the</strong> issues… They did not contend <strong>the</strong>mselves until <strong>the</strong>y confused<br />
<strong>the</strong> fundamental issues <strong>of</strong> Deen with philosophy, which <strong>the</strong>y<br />
considered to be <strong>the</strong> Asl (<strong>the</strong> foundation) (instead <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> texts <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> Deen), to which everything had to be referred to <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>y<br />
made Ta'weel (interpretations) <strong>of</strong> all narrations that<br />
contradicted <strong>the</strong>ir philosophy. They did not stop at that. They<br />
fur<strong>the</strong>r claimed that <strong>the</strong>ir compilations were <strong>the</strong> noblest<br />
knowledge <strong>and</strong> most deserving to be studied <strong>and</strong> whosoever did<br />
not make use <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir interpretation was an ignorant layman.<br />
Thus, fortunate is he who holds on to <strong>the</strong> way <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Salaf <strong>and</strong><br />
refrains from <strong>the</strong> innovations <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Khalaf (<strong>the</strong><br />
late-comers) <strong>and</strong> if he is unable to do so, he<br />
should only take what is needed <strong>and</strong> make<br />
<strong>the</strong> way <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Salaf his basic goal."<br />
