i) The Sunnah explains <strong>the</strong> comm<strong>and</strong>s <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Qur'aan in details. For example, Allah comm<strong>and</strong>s His<br />
believing slaves in Soorah al-Baqarah (2): 43, "…establish<br />
As-Salaat <strong>and</strong> give Zakaat…"<br />
Details <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> comm<strong>and</strong> to establish <strong>the</strong> Salaat are not<br />
found in <strong>the</strong> Qur'aan such as <strong>the</strong> required number <strong>of</strong> daily<br />
prayers, <strong>the</strong> units <strong>of</strong> prayers (rak'ah) <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> recitation in<br />
each mode <strong>of</strong> prayer as well as <strong>the</strong> manner <strong>of</strong> performing<br />
<strong>the</strong> prayer from <strong>the</strong> beginning to <strong>the</strong> end, etc. All <strong>the</strong>se<br />
guidelines are to be taken from <strong>the</strong> Sunnah.<br />
Similarly, Allah comm<strong>and</strong>s in Soorah al-Jumuah<br />
(62), verse 9, "When <strong>the</strong> call is proclaimed for <strong>the</strong> Salaat<br />
on <strong>the</strong> day <strong>of</strong> Friday..."<br />
The words <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> call to prayer (Adhaan) is known<br />
from <strong>the</strong> Sunnah. Likewise, all issues <strong>of</strong> Zakaat e.g., <strong>the</strong><br />
minimum amount on which Zakaat becomes payable, <strong>the</strong><br />
percentage paid, <strong>the</strong> kind <strong>of</strong> wealth, goods <strong>and</strong> animals on<br />
which Zakaat is obligatory, etc. are clearly explained by <strong>the</strong><br />
Prophet .<br />
O<strong>the</strong>r important acts <strong>of</strong> worship like fasting <strong>and</strong> Hajj<br />
are touched upon briefly in <strong>the</strong> Qur'aan <strong>and</strong> for detailed<br />
injunctions Muslims are to refer to <strong>the</strong> Sunnah.<br />
Ano<strong>the</strong>r example is <strong>the</strong> Qur'aanic punishment for <strong>the</strong><br />
thief. "Cut <strong>of</strong>f <strong>the</strong> h<strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> thief, male or female, as a<br />
recompense for that which <strong>the</strong>y committed..."<br />
