<strong>of</strong> Mu'tazili Ideology<br />
a) Prevalence <strong>of</strong> excessive debate on <strong>the</strong> status <strong>of</strong> a Muslim<br />
who commits a major sin due to <strong>the</strong> extreme position taken<br />
on <strong>the</strong> subject by <strong>the</strong> Khawarij (who judge such a person as<br />
outright Kafir) <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Murji'ah (who consider such a person to<br />
be a Mumin with perfect faith). (*1)<br />
The Mu'tazilah presented <strong>the</strong>ir seemingly moderate solution<br />
to <strong>the</strong> argument that such a Muslim is nei<strong>the</strong>r a believer, nor an<br />
outright Kafir (disbeliever), but is between <strong>the</strong> two states.<br />
(*1) The Khawarij fell into this misguidance due to <strong>the</strong>ir exaggeration in<br />
underst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>the</strong> texts <strong>of</strong> warning (i.e., <strong>the</strong> verses that dictate punishments <strong>of</strong> sins),<br />
while <strong>the</strong> Murjiyah were deficient in <strong>the</strong> same as explained by Shaikh Bakr ibn<br />
Abdullah Abu Zaid in Dar' al-Fitna 'an Ahlus-Sunnah. [Learn more about <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
deviated views <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir refutation with references from <strong>the</strong> writings <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> scholars in<br />
our booklet, 'Eeman <strong>and</strong> its components, <strong>and</strong> explaining <strong>the</strong> misguidance <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
Khawarij <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Murjiyah on <strong>the</strong> issue.]<br />
(*2) According to <strong>the</strong> underst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>of</strong> Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jama'ah, a Muslim who is<br />
guilty <strong>of</strong> major sin is not outside <strong>the</strong> fold <strong>of</strong> <strong>Islam</strong>. He may be punished for his major<br />
<strong>and</strong> minor sins in <strong>the</strong> Hereafter or be forgiven by Allah.<br />
