underst<strong>and</strong> that <strong>Islam</strong> has<br />
nothing to fear from reason<br />
<strong>and</strong> so to open <strong>the</strong>ir hearts <strong>and</strong><br />
minds to rational thought…<br />
<strong>Islam</strong>ic reformation can be<br />
understood in two different ways. It<br />
can mean <strong>the</strong> reform <strong>of</strong> society to bring it<br />
back to what have been considered <strong>Islam</strong>ic norms <strong>and</strong><br />
values: most <strong>Islam</strong>ic <strong>and</strong> <strong>Islam</strong>ist reformers are<br />
pursuing this type <strong>of</strong> reform. The o<strong>the</strong>r reform strategy<br />
is to question <strong>the</strong> existing underst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>of</strong> <strong>Islam</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />
seek to articulate a reformed underst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>of</strong> <strong>Islam</strong>:<br />
this is where <strong>Islam</strong>ic modernists <strong>and</strong> rationalists have<br />
always plied <strong>the</strong>ir trade. Here, Ijtihad is employed as an<br />
instrument to critique prevalent underst<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>and</strong><br />
articulate a more compassionate, more modern <strong>and</strong><br />
perhaps even a more liberal underst<strong>and</strong>ing.”<br />
Comments:<br />
As we can see…<br />
(i) Ijtihad is falsely given a definition similar to philosophy - "quest<br />
for truth through… rationalism, human experience, <strong>critical</strong><br />
thinking."<br />
[Two Theories <strong>of</strong> Ijtihad]<br />
(ii) Muslims are asked to follow <strong>the</strong> deviant ways <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
philosophers that confused <strong>and</strong> misguided even someone as<br />
pious <strong>and</strong> knowledgeable as Imam Al-Ghazzali.<br />
