Muhammad Abduh alleged that <strong>the</strong> <strong>Islam</strong>ic nation has agreed,<br />
"except for a very few who can be ignored that if Aql<br />
contradicts Naql, <strong>the</strong>n what is proven by Aql has to be<br />
taken.”<br />
Muhammad Abduh's statement holds good only if he is referring to<br />
<strong>the</strong> Mu'tazilah, <strong>the</strong> Ash'ariyah <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir ilk. But as for Ahlus-Sunnah,<br />
<strong>the</strong>y do not give precedence to Aql over <strong>the</strong> sayings <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Messenger<br />
� as is known from <strong>the</strong> Imams <strong>of</strong> Deen like Imam Malik, Shafa'ee,<br />
Ahmad, Ishaaq ibn Rahwiya, Sufyan ath-Thawreee, ibnul-Mubarak,<br />
ibn Uyaynah, ad-Darimee <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs. Far from 'Aql over Naql' being<br />
<strong>the</strong> majority view, it is a heretical principle rejected overwhelmingly.<br />
For <strong>the</strong> modernist however, this heretical principle is so essential that<br />
Fahmi Huwaidi (considered an '<strong>Islam</strong>ist' journalist) considers<br />
following <strong>the</strong> Naql (texts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Qur'aan <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sunnah) to be idol-<br />
worship, he says,<br />
"idol-worship is not merely worship <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> idols,<br />
ra<strong>the</strong>r idol-worship in today's time has been represented<br />
by… worship <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> texts…"<br />

4. <strong>Modernists</strong> claim that <strong>the</strong> Qur'aan can only be a relevant<br />
source <strong>of</strong> guidance as long as it can be interpreted<br />
independently in <strong>the</strong> present, <strong>and</strong> thus <strong>the</strong>y reject <strong>the</strong><br />
Sunnah as an explainer <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Qur'aan <strong>and</strong> an independent source <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>Islam</strong>ic teaching, especially in matters <strong>of</strong> Aqeedah.<br />
