Spencer Horn - Who Can You Blame
announced that we were going to live life as if
nothing had changed. She had chosen to make
the most of the time she had with us.
She was an eighth grade English teacher, and
she continued to teach despite her condition.
At home, she would grade papers while resting
on the couch. She loved teaching and she loved
her students. They reciprocated her love and
often came by the house to see her. My mother
chose to live! She thought positive thoughts,
sought the best medical advice, and even went
to Mexico for experimental treatments because
she believed they would help.
Precious Memories
Soon after, I was called to serve a mission for
my church in Italy. Missionary service is an
important part of our faith. It was challenging
for me to leave, but my mother wanted me to
serve. I left not knowing if I would ever see her
alive on this earth again. After 14 months of
service, I received a call that my mother was
dying and I returned home immediately. The
doctors did not think she would live until the
weekend. She lived for six months more which
gave us precious time together.
My mother chose to win. She never felt sorry for
herself. She did not choose the cancer, but she
chose how to deal with it. She fought bravely
and spent quality time with her children. While
I was away, she had written inspirational letters
to me, never complaining about her condition.
I am so grateful for her legacy of personal
responsibility.
