more abrupt occurs. It is at that point that our<br />
courage and our questioning can set us on the<br />
path to freedom.<br />
To further this process, I have trademarked<br />
a five-step program called “Living Your<br />
Birthmark.” It begins with recognizing that a<br />
“received identity” is actually an injury to our<br />
true self – our Birthmark. This injury places a<br />
person on the sidelines. While sidelined, they<br />
wait and watch others live their lives.<br />
What we as individuals decide about our future<br />
while on these sidelines is crucial however,<br />
because a fateful crossroads awaits us. At<br />
that point, we either choose to follow an exit<br />
strategy or we decide to “live our birthmark”<br />
via a path marked by miracles of all sizes.<br />
If we choose the latter, we become “survivors”<br />
worthy of the word. Our lives may not look like<br />
what we thought they would, but they can feel<br />
right and be right.<br />
Let’s look at each of these stages individually:<br />
Injury<br />
We all know people who have received serious<br />
injuries in life, but why are some individuals<br />
able to embrace crisis as an opportunity while<br />
others succumb to self-pity? This question lies<br />
at the heart of “Living Your Birthmark.” <strong>The</strong>se<br />
injuries are not necessarily physical disabilities;<br />
more frequently the “injury” is to one’s received<br />
identity or self-esteem. When my father asked<br />
my mother for a divorce, for example, it started<br />
