had a friend in mind for the position; she was
not excited that I got the job instead. Needless
to say, I was not made to feel welcome. In fact,
my boss did all she could to make my life
miserable by creating ridiculous tasks for me
to complete.
That Which Does Not Kill You…
One of my new boss’s favorite tasks was to
have me compile a complete list of what was
purchased along with the item’s brand name.
Surprisingly, not all items are specified by
their brand name so this created a good deal
of extra work as there were hundreds of items.
The only way I survived was with the help of
the Receiving Department and their supervisor.
Those employees wore freezer suits and would
stand in the freezer and call out the brand
names to me while I stood in the doorway.
Otherwise, I would have had to stay in the
freezer for twice as long.
After I rallied from this task, none the less for
wear, my supervisor sent me to count potatoes.
If the box read “80-count,” I was to verify that
there were indeed 80 potatoes in the box. I had
to do this for every box.
That Which Does Not Kill You...
The saying, “That which does not kill you makes
you stronger,” is completely true. In spite of
this pettiness, I loved my new job! I became a
sponge, eager to learn everything I could from
the chefs and the suppliers. In the purchasing
