<strong>The</strong> Power of the Platform - Speakers on Life<br />

had a friend in mind for the position; she was<br />

not excited that I got the job instead. Needless<br />

to say, I was not made to feel welcome. In fact,<br />

my boss did all she could to make my life<br />

miserable by creating ridiculous tasks for me<br />

to complete.<br />

That Which Does Not Kill You…<br />

One of my new boss’s favorite tasks was to<br />

have me compile a complete list of what was<br />

purchased along with the item’s brand name.<br />

Surprisingly, not all items are specified by<br />

their brand name so this created a good deal<br />

of extra work as t<strong>here</strong> were hundreds of items.<br />

<strong>The</strong> only way I survived was with the help of<br />

the Receiving Department and their supervisor.<br />

Those employees wore freezer suits and would<br />

stand in the freezer and call out the brand<br />

names to me while I stood in the doorway.<br />

Otherwise, I would have had to stay in the<br />

freezer for twice as long.<br />

After I rallied from this task, none the less for<br />

wear, my supervisor sent me to count potatoes.<br />

If the box read “80-count,” I was to verify that<br />

t<strong>here</strong> were indeed 80 potatoes in the box. I had<br />

to do this for every box.<br />

That Which Does Not Kill You...<br />

<strong>The</strong> saying, “That which does not kill you makes<br />

you stronger,” is completely true. In spite of<br />

this pettiness, I loved my new job! I became a<br />

sponge, eager to learn everything I could from<br />

the chefs and the suppliers. In the purchasing<br />

profession, suppliers will embrace you with<br />
