Ron Lee - The Corporate Ninja - Revealed
The Lesson? Everything you do contributes
to your life purpose.
Over the next few years, I became a leading
door-to-door salesman and later a financial
planner. One night, in 1986, I sat watching a
television talent show called Star Search with
my girlfriend who dared me to go on and do
stand-up comedy, so I did. Ah, the bravado
that accompanies ignorance.
Three days after phoning the Star Search
production office, I was auditioning with the
five minutes of material that I had spent the
entire weekend writing. Ten days after that, we
recorded the show and I was to compete against
the winner of the four previous shows. A stroke
of fate had me as the winner.
The Lesson? If you don’t know you can’t do
something, you will probably be able to do
it.
One of the judges on that first show was Penny
Heaton, the manager of The Comedy Store.
Midweek, she phoned to ask if I would do a
set at “The Store” on the following Friday and
Saturday. Not ever having performed stand-up
comedy before, I asked, “How long of a set do
you want me to do?
“In the second spot, we only need you to do
about twenty minutes. Can you cut your
routine back to twenty?”
“Cut it back to twenty? Sure.” I agreed quickly,
though I wondered how I was going to pad my
five minutes out to twenty!
