Chapter Three<br />
Crossing the Bridge of Fear<br />
Rachel Magario<br />
You probably wouldn’t think of being blind as<br />
having an advantage. It can, however, help to<br />
avoid distractions. Without sight, it is easier for<br />
me to ignore the apparent dangers around me.<br />
Sometimes, we all must turn a blind eye or a<br />
deaf ear to the road blocks that lie between us<br />
and our intended destination. We can’t let fear<br />
get a grip on us or keep us from achieving our<br />
goals.<br />
If you’ve ever felt that you have too many<br />
problems and are so overwhelmed that you<br />
think you aren’t going to make it through<br />
another day, don’t give in. I have felt that way<br />
more than once and I am still <strong>here</strong>. If I can<br />
make it, you can, too!<br />
Coming to the United States<br />
When I was nineteen years old, I moved to the<br />
United States from Chile, chasing my dreams. I<br />
received a scholarship to study at <strong>The</strong> University<br />
of Kansas. As a blind and international student,<br />
I faced many trials. I had to improve my<br />
knowledge of basic English in order to study,<br />
I had to identify with the new culture, and I<br />
