TÜRKİYE’NİN TEPKİSİ SERT OLDU<br />

Türkiye, Rusya’nın Ermeni soykırımı<br />

iddialarının 100. yılı anmalarındaki söylemlerine<br />

oldukça ciddi tepkiler verdi.<br />

Türkiye bu konuda Rusya’ya “Soykırımın<br />

ne olduğunu en iyi sen bilirsin. Önce<br />

kendi tarihine bak” diyerek çok sert<br />

tepki verdi. Ancak, Türkiye soykırım<br />

iddialarını kabul eden diğer ülkelerden<br />

tepki olarak büyükelçilerini geri çağırmasına<br />

rağmen dikkat çekici bir şekilde<br />

Ankara in terms of Armenian genocide<br />

claims. There are deep-rooted<br />

historical, cultural and political bonds<br />

between Armenia and Russia. The<br />

Armenian diaspora in Russia is highly<br />

powerful and influential with its 2-million<br />

population. Armenia is the most<br />

important partner of Moscow in the<br />

South Caucasus with military base<br />

provided to Russia. The two countries<br />

see each other as strategic partners.<br />

Armenia has entrusted its economy<br />

and security almost entirely to Russia.<br />

Moreover, Armenia made a very important<br />

choice by joining the Eurasian<br />

Economic Union as of January <strong>2015</strong>,<br />

which is Russia’s strategic integration<br />

project. In this regard, President of<br />

Russia Putin chose to attend the 100 th<br />

anniversary ceremony in Yerevan although<br />

he was invited personally by<br />

President Erdoğan to the 100 th anniversary<br />

ceremony of the Çanakkale Victory<br />

on April 24.<br />

Russia has awarded the strategic choice<br />

of Yerevan in a sense by giving support<br />

to Armenia on April 24. Even if the<br />

Çanakkale ceremonies were held on<br />

March 18 or a couple of weeks before<br />

April 24, Putin would nonetheless go<br />

to Armenia on April 24 and genocide<br />

claims would escalate anyhow. Russia<br />

may not give such a substantial support<br />

if Turkey had seriously warned Russia<br />

at the top level. In our opinion, Russia’s<br />

laxness is stemming from the belief<br />

that Ankara would not give a serious<br />

reaction to this issue or even if Turkey<br />

did, it would get over this crisis easily.<br />

It seems this belief was consolidated as<br />

Turkey is dependent on Russia in many<br />

areas such as energy, trade, construction<br />

and tourism.<br />

TURKEY’S RESPONSE WAS STRONG<br />

Turkey gave quite serious reactions to<br />

the declarations of Russia in the commemoration<br />

of the 100 th anniversary<br />

of Armenia’s genocide claims. Turkey<br />

made a harsh statement by saying, “You<br />

know the best what is genocide. First,<br />

look at your own history.” However,<br />

Turkey did not call back its ambassador<br />

in Moscow while it called back<br />

the ambassadors in other countries<br />

that recognized the genocide claims.<br />

In order to prevent any escalation in<br />

the tension between the two countries,<br />
