telephone bypass capacitors A set of fixed capacitors<br />

installed between each wire in a telephone<br />

line and an electrical ground to bypass radiofrequency<br />

energy. It can reduce or prevent radiofrequency<br />

interference (RFI) to telephone sets and<br />

data terminals.<br />

telephone data set A device that converts signals<br />

from a data terminal for passage over a telephone<br />

circuit to a data-processing center.<br />

telephone dialer In a security system, a circuit<br />

that automatically dials one or more telephone<br />

numbers, alerting the recipient(s) that an emergency<br />

exists at a given location.<br />

telephone induction coil A small telephone-toline<br />

impedance-matching transformer used in<br />

by means of telephony. Included are<br />

telephones, switchboards and associated equipment,<br />

photograph transmitted and/or received by<br />

means of FACSIMILE.<br />

telepresence An advanced form of robotic TELE-<br />

OPERATION, in which a human operator has the<br />

sensors, tactile sensors, and electromechanical<br />

control devices. The operator uses, or wears,<br />

equipment similar to that used for VIRTUAL RE-<br />

ALITY (VR).<br />

teleprinter A terminal telegraph printing machine.<br />

TelePrompTer A device that presents a running<br />

display on a screen before a television announcer,<br />

performer, or speaker, of dialogue.<br />

teleran A ground-to-air communications system.<br />

telescoping antenna A vertical antenna consisting<br />

of separate lengths of metal tubing of progressively<br />

smaller diameter so that one can slide into<br />

another. The antenna can be pulled out to full<br />

length or compressed to the length of the largestdiameter<br />

telegraphy.<br />

Teletypesetter An electronic system for operating<br />

a distant Linotype.<br />

teletypewriter A variety of printing telegraph using<br />

electric typewriters and associated equipment.<br />

The message is typed on the keyboard at<br />

the transmitting station and is typed out in corresponding<br />

letters at the receiving station. The<br />

same typewriter is able to send and receive messages.<br />
