Code InformationWhen are Part 180, Part 185 and Part 175 of the Il Adm Code used in inspecting a building?Generally, every school board shall secure approval from the regional superintendent for anyconstruction or like activity subject to the requirements of Part 180. (See Section 180.40c).Every facility (other than vehicular unit) and new structures shall conform to the requirementsof Part 180, which references the BOCA National Building Code; the Illinois Accessibility Codeinstead of the accessibility provisions stated in Chapter 11 of BOCA; the Illinois Plumbing Codeinstead of those expressed in the BOCA National Plumbing Code incorporated in Chapter 35;and the Illinois State Fire Marshal's rule titled Boiler and Pressure Vessel Safety instead ofthose expressed in Boiler and Pressure Vessel Safety Code published by ASME 89 asincorporated by BOCA in Chapter 35. (See Section 180.60).BOCA permits an existing facility to be maintained in compliance with the building code thatpreviously applied to the facility. All equipment, systems, devices and safeguards required bya previous code or statute for the structure or premises when erected or altered shall bemaintained in good working order. The requirements of BOCA Chapter 34 shall not provide thebasis for removal or abrogation of fire protection and safety systems and devices in existingstructures. (See Section 3401.2)The following Table 1 shows the timeline for code maintenance requirements:ß Part 185 / Part 175 / Part 180 (BOCA 93) / Part 180 (BOCA 96) à7/1/65 3/24/95 7/6/98 (current)The use of Table 1 is illustrated by the following examples:Example 1: A design professional repairing a boiler, a bleacher or heating equipment installednew in 1962 would use code Part 185 for code compliance.Example 2: The local board installed a new boiler on September 10, 1965; the regionalsuperintendent will use the guidelines of previous code Part 175 for his annual inspection.Note: The Health/Life Safety Annual Inspection Glossary breaks down each item into variouscode compliance reference numbers, for example:16. Inspection Certificate (Section 180.60d, Previously 185.430, 185.495; 175.525)Inspection of.....This item #16 should be maintained under Part 175, Section 175.525. The actual codeshould be reviewed for specific repair and replacement standards.Any alterations or addition to an existing structure shall conform to the requirements for a newstructure, without requiring the existing structure to comply with the code for new constructionand shall not result in an increase in hazard to the occupants. Any existing structure plusadditions shall comply with the height and area requirements of BOCA (See Section 3401.1and Section 3401.2).7-2
