Hold-Open Devices (185.370b11A; 175.275; 180/BC:712.4.1; 180/F:303.4.1; 180/PM:704.2)Hold-open devices are prohibited on all doors described as “self-closing.” Exception to this rulerequires that the “hold-open device” is an approved electrically operated device that is wired into thefire detection and alarm system such that it will automatically release the door if or when the fire alarmsystem is actuated.24. Fire Extinguishers/ Inspected (185.395e1; 175.495; 180/BC:921.2; 180/F:519.2; NFPA 10)Class ABC fire extinguishers are required and should be readily accessible in the auditorium. The fireextinguishers must be inspected annually and display a current tag. (Other classes of fire extinguishersmay be substituted if there are special hazards requiring special protection.) The number requireddepends on the size of the space. Under 180 employees or attendants of assembly occupancies shallbe instructed in the proper utilization of portable fire extinguishers and other manual fire suppressionequipment where provided.25. Fire Alarm Signal (185.395d4; 175.470e; 180/PM:705.6; 180/F:702.4; 180/IAC 400.310s)An audible fire alarm signal (or signals) must be an alarm horn loud enough to be heard above noiselevel in the auditorium. Construction under the 180 code must comply with the IAC which requires allpublic use and common areas to have audible and visual alarms. IAC also requires persons in thespace to be able to hear an audible alarm above the noise level in the space.26. Emergency Lighting (185.360c7B; 175.480; 180/F:601.1; 180/BC:1024; 180/BC:2706)Emergency lighting is required for means of egress illumination in rooms or spaces where more thanone exit or exit access is required, and must be connected to an electrical back-up or battery system.27. Illuminated Exit Signs (185.370a6; 175.480a; 180/PM:702.5)Illuminated exit signs and directional exit signs shall be installed at every required exit doorway.28. <strong>Manual</strong> Fire Alarm Station (185.395d3; 175.470; 180/PM:705.6.2; 180/BC:918.0)A manual fire alarm station shall be located in or adjacent to the auditorium. New or replacementmanual fire alarm stations are required to conform to NFPA 72.29. Number of exits (185.370b4; 185.380c5; 175.410g; 180/PM:702.3; 180/BC:1006-7)At least two exits, remote from each other must be readily available from every space in the building.AUTOMOTIVE SHOP31. Fire Detectors (185.395c2D; 175.460a1; 180/PM:705.5.1; 180/PM:705.6.1)Fire detectors are required in automotive shops not protected by an automatic sprinkler system.32. Door Closers (185.370m6B; 185.380c10E; 185.390g4; 175.285; 175.260; 180/PM:702.6)Except in sprinklered buildings, automatic door closers are required on all doors required to maintainthe fire/smoke rating of the space on at least one side of the door opening and in all “special educationoccupancies.”33.
