Hold-Open Devices (185.370b11A; 175.275; 180/BC:712.4.1; 180/F:303.4.1; 180/PM:704.2)Hold-open devices are prohibited on all doors described as “self-closing.” Exception to this rulerequires that the “hold-open device” is an approved electrically operated device that is wired into thefire detection and alarm system such that it will automatically release the door if or when the fire alarmsystem is actuated.14. Fire Extinguisher/ Inspected (185.395e1; 175.495; 180/BC:921.2; 180/F:519.2; NFPA 10)A class ABC fire extinguisher is required and should be readily accessible in the arts and craftsclassroom. The fire extinguisher must be inspected annually and display a current tag. The numberrequired depends on the size of the space.15. Exhaust Fan (185.460a6; 175.564; 180/PM:404.4; 180/BC:1209.0; 180/BC:1208.3;180/F:2317.2)An exhaust fan must be provided in any arts and crafts classroom where objectionable odors or fumesare produced. Such contaminated air must be exhausted to the outside and not re-circulated.16. Kilns - Exhaust (185.460a6; 175.564; 180/BC:1208.3)An exhaust hood evacuating fumes to the outside must be provided above all kilns unless themanufacturer’s directions indicate otherwise, e.g. downward exhausting kilns. In every case, the fumesmay not be exhausted into the building HVAC system.17. Kilns - Fuel Switch (185.440b2; 175.536b(3); 180/PM:603.5)In rooms or spaces containing fuel-fired equipment, “Emergency” fuel-burner switches are required. Itis not required in relation to electric kilns in art rooms.18. Toxic Art Supplies (105 ILCS.135)No toxic art supplies are to be used by K through 6 th grade students. Toxic art supplies to be used by7 th through 12th grade students are subject to the requirements imposed by the Toxic Art Supplies inSchools Act. (Suggest posting Right to Know signs in areas where toxic art supplies are stored.)19. Eye Glasses (105 ILCS 115/1 (a) (b)During any activity which may harm eyes, industrial quality eye protective devices (eye glasses) arerequired to be furnished for all teachers, visitors, and students.AUDITORIUMS20. Posted Occupant Loads (185.830/NFPA 101; 175.130/NFPA 101; 180/F:601.7;180F:1003.2.2.5)In every assembly occupancy, the approved occupant load must be determined by the governingbody. Under 185 and 175 only, if the approved occupant load is at least 200, then the area is anassembly area, and posting the approved occupant load is highly recommended. Under 180, if thespace has been designated an assembly area, the occupancy load must be posted.21. Fire Detectors (185.395c2D; 175.460a1; 180/PM:705.5.1; 180/PM:705.6.1)Fire detectors are required in auditoriums not protected by an automatic sprinkler system.22. Door Closers (185.370m6B; 185.380c10E; 185.390g4; 175.285; 175.260; 180/PM:702.6)Except in sprinklered buildings, automatic door closers are required on all doors required to maintainthe fire/smoke rating of the space on at least one side of the door opening and in all “special educationoccupancies.”2-13
