Hold-Open Devices (185.370b11A; 175.275; 180/BC:712.4.1; 180/F:303.4.1; 180/PM:704.2)Hold-open devices are prohibited on all doors described as “self-closing.” Exception to this rulerequires that the “hold-open device” is an approved electrically operated device that is wired into thefire detection and alarm system such that it will automatically release the door if or when the fire alarmsystem is actuated.154. Fire Extinguishers/ Inspected (185.395e1; 175.495; 180/BC:921.2; 180/F:519.2; NFPA 10)Class ABC fire extinguishers are required and should be readily accessible. Other classes of fireextinguishers may be substituted if there are special hazards requiring special protection. The fireextinguishers must be inspected annually and display a current tag. The number required depends onthe size of the space.155. Fire Alarm Signal (185.395d4; 175.470e; 180/PM:705.6; 180/IAC 400.310s)An audible fire alarm signal (or signals) must be an alarm horn loud enough to be heard above noiselevel in the shop. Construction under the 180 code must comply with the IAC which requires all publicuse and common areas to have audible and visual alarms. IAC also requires persons in the space tobe able to hear an audible alarm above the noise level in the space.156. Exhaust/Welding Booth (185.460a3; 175.552; 180/F:2317.2; 180/BC:1209.0;180/BC:1208.3; 180/PM:404.4;)An exhaust fan must be provided in every welding booth. Such contaminated air must be exhausted tothe outside and not re-circulated.157. Eye Glasses (105 ILCS 115/1 (a) (b))Industrial quality eye protective devices (eye glasses) are required in all industrial tech/metalworking/machine shops. Door Closers (185.380c10D; 185.390g4; 175.285a; 180/PM:702.6)Except in sprinklered buildings, automatic door closers are required on all doors required to maintainthe fire/smoke rating of the space on at least one side of the door opening and in all “special educationoccupancies.” An exception may be made if the closet is normally maintained in the closed, lockedposition.163.
