Compatibilitywith additional operating systems and browser versions has also beenenhanced. Refer to Table 1-1 on page 14 for a list of compatible operatingsystems and browser versions.Sametime COM ToolkitThe Sametime COM Toolkit provides the basic Sametime community services,delivered as a standard DLL with interfaces that represent the services provided.The toolkit is easy to use and can be used to enable applications with Sametimein any development environment that supports COM, such as Visual Basic/VBA(Microsoft® Office.)While the Sametime COM Toolkit is relatively limited in its functionality comparedto the Java Toolkit, it does provide access to any environment that supportsCOM objects. For example, if you want to develop Sametime awareness forMicrosoft Office products, then the Sametime COM Toolkit is the answer. Thetoolkit also supports the OLE Automation technology by providing a TLB file aswell as a DLL to support importing all interface names. By using your owndevelopment tools, you can create your own user interface on top of theSametime services.Sametime C++ ToolkitThe Sametime C++ Toolkit is an object-oriented, modular, and thread-safe API.This Toolkit is a collection of components that allow developers to enhanceWindows applications with community services, such as awareness and instantmessaging. Using the Microsoft Visual C++ Developer Studio, developers canquickly and easily Sametime-enable any Win32 or MFC-based Windowsapplication.You can use this toolkit if you want to develop applications native to the Windowsenvironment. Unlike the Java Toolkit, the Sametime C++ Toolkit does not have auser interface (UI) component. If you create an application in which a userinterface is expected, then you will have to develop your own interface.One very popular example of an application developed using the Sametime C++Toolkit includes NotesBuddy from <strong>IBM</strong>’s alphaWorks®(http://www.alphaworks.ibm.com). NotesBuddy is a lightweight tool for <strong>Lotus</strong>Notes and Internet (POP3) mail that integrates instant messaging and buddystatus with e-mail to produce a single messaging tool. NotesBuddy can accessthe Sametime server and provide instant messaging and buddy status. Chats ore-mail can be initiated anyplace a buddy name is displayed and then saved tofolders or forwarded to others.
